Brake Setup on my Race Car - Part 2
 

Part 1 of this I posted in the 3rd gen section back in 2008 on the race car brakes, you can see that here:

In 2010 I did some changes/updates the pedal setup and fluid plumbing and am finally getting around to posting on it, thus this 'part 2' thread :-)

Here is the scoop on the main parts:

Tilton pedal setup - Aluminum Version 600 series
76-Series Master Cylinders
3-Chamber Fluid Reservoir
Remote bias adjustment kit
Brake pressure switch banjo bolt (to use as signal for brake lights)

Note on the location of the reservoir:
The reason it is where it is now is that I originally planned to run the shell/skin of the stock dash and located the reservoir to peek out about 1/2 way from the spot on the dash where the center speaker hole is, its the same reason the switch panel is shaped as it is, it fits with the stock shape of the center radio panel curve in the dash skin. Here is a pic of when I as doing that path/setup so you can see what I mean (it actually looks pretty good LOL):

...BUT, I decided to ditch mounting the stock dash for now. If I can work it back in later I may, but its not a priority.

Another random note:
The 4 corners of the car (calipers and rotors, et) are the same as the part 1 thread I listed above, however, I do have plans to update the 4 corners as well but that may not get any action until next year as it is not priority right now.

Good luck w/ the 20b etc.... but most importantly get that thing back on track (specifically VIR w/me and 10 other FDs talk about a PARTY) ASAP :icon_tup:

Hey BigAl, and Fritz, the trans is still the t5 dogbox i had in the car the last few years, that crazy looking shifter setup was the extention I needed, thats all :-)

(but i do wan to run a seq, once I grow another lung to sell to pay for it... already sold both my lungs to pay for the 20b/motec setup HAHA)

We plan to move the 20b back a bit, so I prob will not need my remote shifter setup any more, well see once we get the motor to fit in there :-)

first of all who told you I sold my lung (that was supposed to be a secret!). The good deals are out there you just have to be on the lookout ALL of the time. The tranny I bought came from another continent, you just never know where you'll find a good deal.

By the way, I still plan to connect with you on the brakes thing. I want to compare our setups to see if I should make a similar change you did to get better braking.

How difficult is it to push the brakes without the brake booster?

Well, not as easy as with the brake booster :-)
It takes a decent amount of effort to brake hard, so it is a trade off of brake feel vs brake effort, and in long races fatigue can be an issue if your not in shape for it. Same goes for the steering.

However, concider this, I am 5'7" and average build and I do not really have a problem with either the braking or steering, I actually enjoy having it take some physical effort to manage the inputs. With that said, for really long endurance racing it makes sense to have pwr assist steering and brakes.

..if you fit in there, how tall are you?

I am 5'11" you said you're 5'7" right? I'm not sure if it would work. I tried something like that once before and it didn't go well at all. I'm not sure how tall the driver of that car was, but I'm certain the pedals were way too close. That car had the dual master cylinders too, but it was mid engined and only weighed something like 600 kilograms. The brakes were linear and fairly easy to push, but after about an hour I got so fatigued that my right leg was shaking when I was on the brakes and I couldn't get the heel-toe timing correct anymore. It felt like I traded some muscular precision for mechanical precision, but I guess that I might need to train more. I'm just wondering how it would feel in a heavier car. It's something to think about anyway. Everything seems fine when you drive a street car, but after driving a racecar my whole body is sore the next day.
