Brake questions
 

I'm prepping my 82 12A for driver's ed.

I have a couple of questions/problems:

1. I am getting leaks at the rear proportioning block on one of the hard lines I replaced. I tried re-torquing and I even tried using teflon tape with no success - it still drips brake fluid. I also have the same thing where the axle rubber line connects to the hard line on the body that runs to the master cylinder. Any idea what would be causing these leaks and how to fix? All other connections that I have reassembled are fine.

2. Can I leave out the brake hardware - clips and anti rattle springs for track use? Any down side to this other than noise from the brakes?

3. The wheels studs and nuts I installed only allow the stud to thread 80% through the nut. Is this a problem - do I need longer studs for safety?

1. Teflon isn't going to help the seal, the double flare is compromised, either at the prop block or in the line itself.. I'm sure you can find a new prop block and line, just head to the local junkyards, they're almost always on the cars out here in California.. No one wants them.

2. The springs, sure. The clips, I'd leave, just for safety sake, help keeps the lines secured and from rubbing up against something metal and wearing them down. I don't see any real gains here however.

3. as long as the lug threads on as far as the diameter of the stud (in this case, 12mm), you're fine. Hardened studs is always a good idea, and makes wheel changes easier.

Thanks for the response. I think I may need to get a new prop. block.

One thing that you said doesn't seem to match what I am seeing. To me it looks like all the lines that I removed are single flaired, so I put single flair lines back on the car. I even bought a double flair, and it did not seem to seat properly in the connection.

Are you sure that I need double flairs? Is it double flaired at both ends? Sounds like that could be my problem... but none of my other lines are leaking.

Also, why does no one want the prop blocks off the axles in junk yards? Is there a better replacement part?

I haven't seen an american or Japanese brakeline yet that wasn't doubleflared.. I heard of Japanese lines that are bubble flared, but never seen one, and I know 100% sure that the RX-7 isn't one.

Yes, doubleflares on both ends..

No one wants the prop blocks probably because they aren't a wear item.. Not like a master cylinder or caliper. You may have gotten something jammed in there, cracked it from overtorqueing it (it is aluminum), or damaged the line itself..
