Boost controller ... what class?

I've been looking at moving up to Street Prepared next season. So in order to do all the necessary modifications, I will need to do some stuff to make the mods safe. Anyhow, cutting to the chase, I want to put in a boost controller, but I'm not sure if that's legal in SP. From the Mouton website:

14.1 Authorized Modifications

D.Alternate computer control modules may be used whenever an equivalent change to the conventional system is allowed. For example, alternate computer module control of ignition settings or fuel injection is allowed. Direct turbocharger boost control by alternate computer control is not, since there is no equivalent mechanical allowance.

Turbochargers may not be added, changed or modified. Turbocharger and supercharger systems may only be updated/backdated with the accompanying engine unit. No changes are allowed to waste gates, pressure sensors or their location, and to other turbocharger or supercharger boost limiting systems. This allowance does not permit changes to blow-off (pop-off) valves. Devices known as "fuel cut defensers", and any modifications which alter or defeat the fuel cutoff when it is activated by boost level, are not permitted.

I can use the aftermarket ECU for advanced timing and fuel maps, but not for boost control, if applicable. My adding a boost controller, I'm not technically altering any pressure sensors or the wastegate itself ... and really, I'm effectively adding another fuel cut defenser. Anyways, I dunno how to intrepret this. Anybody with a rulebook that can spell it out for me?

You wish - maybe in E-Mod.

Really?!?! Not even in Prepared? Might as well go SM2 if that's the case ... then I can run unlimited boost! :D

Actually, Ted was correct up until 1 or 2 years ago. Your boost controller will not be legal in ASP. But the good news is that you don't have to go into EM anymore. It used to be that no multi-turbo car could be in Prepared, but they changed it in 2000 (or 2001). You can now go into AP if the number of turbos remains the same as stock.

The only reasonable thing to help deal with higher boost levels associated with otherwise ASP legal modifications is a RRFPR. At least that's my thought on it. I believe what Tri-Point did with their ASP car was to run a standalone computer for fuel and ignition and retain the stock ECU for boost control.

I haven't read the 2002 (or 2003 if they are available) rules on this subject, but it was legal to run in AP last year at least.

Crap - SCCA has been going through so many rules changes it's making me dizzy!

No wonder I dropped my membership! :D

Ok. So what's the price difference we're talking here? A Profec B is about $300 ... how much for a rising rate fuel pressure regulator?

profec B is nice and you can hide it away from the tech inspectors.....unless ofcourse you go to nationals.

Here's your answer:

Boost controller will put you into Prepared or Street Mod.

Hell, some divisional series are competitive enough that someone might contest you. I have no intentions of competing at nationals ... realistically speaking, the FD is no longer a competitive car at that level. :(

I still have problems putting away those pesky M coupes ...

I know, I know. I was just hoping that there would be some way to re-interpret the rules, since technically, I'm limiting the car by putting on a boost controller. Hey Damon, guess what Beth and Erik are building? I'll give you a hint ... it's a SM2 car.

DamonB 10-21-02 02:48 PM

I spoke to Beth about it at the Houston Divisional and know they are accumulating parts. It should be fun once it's developed.

We got one better here: the world's first 10A three rotor will spring to life within the next year. That's all I am gonna tell for now :D

redrotorR1 10-21-02 05:36 PM

10A? Is that a 1.5L 3-rotor? The Strelnieks brought out the half-transplanted version to the last Spokes event. It's basically everything else but the actual engine/turbos transplant ... and they were frickin' fast. At this point, they're trying to figure out whether or not to go sequential twins or small single. It'll be very interesting, to say the least.
