bigger 1st gen brakes?
Anyone know where I can get bigger brake rotors and better calipers for a 1982 base model? Have 16" REAL race wheels and need bigger front brakes.
Thanks for any help |
check out guru motorsports. they sell a 4 pot from caliper kit that uses the same bolt pattern so yo can keep your current wheels. its about 800$ us for the bolt on kit no clue on how long it owuld take for you to get it or anything

The easiest and cheapest upgrade is to put the brakes from an '84-'85 GSL-SE on the car. If you find that to still not be enough, you might want to check with Wilwood about a custom application. Just keep in mind, you can spend $1000-6000 real quick on custom racing brakes.

You can check Max's site for some 12"Rotors and 4pistons calipers.

never enough
I better start saving. . .

One more idea.
I am planning on trying to take a set of GSL-SE front brakes and putting them on my non-SE. In know that these brakes are 26mm wider than my non-SE, but I think I can make it work. I am running 14" 83 limited wheels now, so the SE rotors will fit. (They also fit inside my 13" steel wheels with race rubber). I have to run 1/4" (about 6mm) spacers on the fronts now, and I have more room. My plan is to see if I can cut the SE rotor back 13mm and re-drill the rotor to the 110mm bolt pattern. Here is how I add it up: cut the rotor 13mm thinner on the bolt up face, I rub now with 6mm spacer, I think I could go 6mm more and be ok. 13+6+6=26mm So, that is my plan. What do you think? |
the gsl-se spindle is longer. the bearings are the same (12a and gsl-se) but the se is spaced further apart

Hmmmm, I did not think of that. Is there a way to get around that?
Maybe re-cutting the bearing seat in the GSL-SE rotor so that the bearings distance is the same as the Non-SE. Could it work? Got another thought? |
u can just convert the whole thing to the GSL-SE
|
Yes, I could but I would prefer to not make that choge.

Guru, here on the board, converted the 2nd gen 5 lug spindles, brakes and all that over to a first gen a while back. I havent heard anymore from it, whether its finished or not. I think its one of the things he wants to put the final touches on and make a kit for. If thats what your looking for PM him and see how far he is with it :)

Great, thanks for the info. I will drop him a line.
