Better prepped coupe or convert.

I am still researching building a 2nd gen auto-xer. The 2nd gens with NA 13B now run in F-prepared which has a min weight of 2075 with after market fuel system.

I have seen a fair amount of EP road cars around 2200lbs

Has any one developed a convertible 2nd gen. I would think you should be able to make it lighter then a coupe since you can remove the front windscreen and frame and not mess with the weight of the rear hatch. I would prefer to be underweight, then add weight to balance the car.

Any thoughts?

Thanks

check MAZDATRIX. they have SCCA EP RACE CAR.

From what I know even thought Convertible dont have windscreen and frame and not mess with the weight of the rear hatch. but chassic's sheet metal is much thicker than coupe.

the verts are heavier. It is not simply a coupe with the roof chopped off. The chassis was retweaked and remanufactured specifically for the vert model. They are significantly heavier as a result.

Thanks for the info. I understand it not just a matter of chopping the top off. I understand the chassis need to be braced to reduce flexing without the roof structure. With that said, often times in prepared classes which have liberal rules, you can over come model specific issues and create an advantage.

Thanks

Take a coupe, and cut off the roof. The cage take care of chassis stiffness. I think that is what they did on the mazdatrix car. I believe min weight for EP is 2450.

That's a big no no in under the SCCA auto-x rules. You can be protested for cutting the roof off a coupe or sedan. The magic number for me is 2075lbs which would be the min weight for F-Prepared for a NA.

I probably going to start with a fully prep EP road racer. It looks like the most economical and less hassle way to go.

The fuel injection penalty is being fazed out over the next couple of years, so you need to be able to get the car down to the class minimum.
