Best way to do a burnout w/out line lock

I unplugged my abs fuse, but my car still squirms away during my burn outs. I've seen guys in fd's just sit still and do long burn outs. Am I not pressing the brakes hard enough?

TailHappy 06-06-03 02:54 PM

Hmph, I had the same thing happen, but I hadn't unplugged the ABS fuse and was sure this would fix the problem. Then again, I had to replace my tranny not long after my attempts at burnouts....so I'm not sure I'll be trying that anymore in this car!

turbojeff 06-07-03 12:51 AM

You don't need to unplug the ABS. I assume your in the waterbox, rev it up a little, dump the clutch, move clutch foot over to the brake pedal. Press the brake until the car doesn't move. I have had no problems doing this.

Don't make it to complicated...

93redFD 06-07-03 01:57 PM

yea its very easy. In my last 3rd gen, very rarely did the abs effect the burnout.

efiniracing 06-09-03 09:07 AM

So I must be just not pressing the brakes hard enough. It's weird using my left foot for the brakes.

efiniracing 06-09-03 09:08 AM

Also, do you guys think that doing a good burnout puts too much load on the engine? Have you ever gotten detonation as a result of doing too long of a burnout?

efiniracing 06-10-03 11:27 AM

Are you guys doing your burnouts in 2nd gear? I've never tried but I heard that it was better in 2nd becaause you get more tire speed.

AnthonyNYC 06-10-03 01:49 PM

Here's some info on burnouts...

Clutch in
Rev to about 6000
Floor it at the same time releasing the clutch and stepping on the brakes.

If you step on the brakes to hard, the car will stall.
If you step on the brakes to lightly, the car will move.
I always step on the brakes harder and then release slowly.

Next item.

Burnout on street tires - very easy. If you get wheelhop, let off otherwise you will break your rear.

Burnout on MT ET Streets - You will never get wheelhop, the tires are too soft, you might get wheelhop if the tire pressure is to high.

WATER BOX

Street Tires - with street tires I do not recommend going through the water box, the water stays on the treads and its so easy to to a burnout with street tires. I never had to.

With Slicks - go through the water box and let the car fall in the little decline. You have to spin the tires in the water to get them wet. Some people just roll through but I find its much easier when you stay there and spin the tires for about 2 sec.
So you are sitting in the water box, spin the tires for like 1-2 seconds. Now move up to the dry area. This is where you will do your full blown burnout. Some people feather the gas and some leave it steady. I like the sound of feathering the gas....

This is just from my experience on what works for me.

Below is a video of one of my old burnouts...

My burnout...

Below is another video of a really nice burnout from Tony at T and R Racing...He has line locks...

Really nice one!

At our track, if you go through the water box, you get yelled at.. They want you to go around, then back into the water box. That way you don't get water in the treads on your front tires.

Hi Guys,

My workshop is currently building a 600bhp FC. We will be using full slicks, but will like to know what is the setup, that the dragsters use to lock the front wheels for the burn-out before the 1/4mile? I understand it's some kind of mechanism. Anyone, here that can intro on how to go about building one? Or any recommendations on which workshop, has one for sale? This is very urgent, as we will be up for the race in 1 week's time. So hope you bro's out there can give a helping hand. We have to smoke those dominating Skylines over here.

Thanks!!

efiniracing 06-11-03 10:16 AM

You just need a line lock. You get what you pay for, there are some our there for a hundred bucks and some as high as four hundred bucks. Do a search on this forum and you should be able to find where to get one for your car.

Thats a great run Anthony, your car looks and sound like mine. Are you still running stock turbos? What shocks and springs do you have? Thanks

vosko 06-11-03 12:20 PM

i heel and toe with my right foot in my car to do a burnout.... i just rev to 8k rpm and dump it and mash the brakes.... works great, i have some video too

i am currently putting a linelock in my FD and removing the ABS :D

AnthonyNYC 06-12-03 03:40 AM

On that run I was still running the stock turbos @ 15psi I had greddy springs with the original shocks! I never changed the shocks since I like the way the car rode.

Damn! I guess I just need to practice. I tried doing a few burnouts last night and the car still kept turning to one side. Atleast I got it to stop stalling. I just have to keep it straight now.

Juster 06-14-03 06:02 PM

Anthony,
nice burnout.
shit i broke my rear differential trying to practice. apparently i was getting wheel hop. totally cracked my diff in half and bent my ppf.

Juster 06-14-03 06:07 PM

vosko,
i couldnt really tell but what did you run that day?

efiniracing 06-16-03 03:02 PM

"shit i broke my rear differential trying to practice. apparently i was getting wheel hop. totally cracked my diff in half and bent my ppf."

When that happened how long was it before you had serviced your diff?

Cause I broke my rear end too, just launching at the strip and when we took it apart it was very apparant that I needed to service my gears.

Juster 06-17-03 12:34 AM

i've havent serviced my diff for as long as i owned it, 8 months...

efiniracing 06-17-03 09:44 AM

Well 8 months is not bad. When I broke mine, I hadn't serviced it in a 100,000 miles. :) I know I'm an idiot, a broke idiot. :p I have a rear end off of an automatic on now. The 3.90's make my car slower but I think it's much stronger than the 4.10 since there are less teeth. 4.30's coming soon, I'm thinking about the 4.70's as well. Anyone have info on the 4.70's? Rx7.com told me that they don't like them.

ErnieT 06-18-03 04:53 PM

I take out my abs fuse and heel/toe the brake and gas with one foot. Rev to 8000rpm and drop the clutch. No problems. Like Anthony said, it helps if you spin the tires a little in the water.

they sell line locks, pay an extra 10 bucks and you get 2 day air.

vosko 06-21-03 11:17 AM

line lock is WORKING

:D

efiniracing 06-21-03 11:24 AM

Are you using the Hurst line lock?
Also have you ever had problems w/ detonation when doing a long burn out before a race?
I went to the track last night and after my burnout while going down the track my motor just quit at 5k and a big flame came out my exhaust. I shifted up a gear and excellorated again, then at 5k it did it again. I don't know if it was detonation or fuel cut but both times a flame came out the exhaust.

vosko 06-21-03 11:34 AM

i am using a jegs line lock valve. my car has never detonated during a burnout it has hit the rev limiter and shot massive flames. you have a problem i would be very careful!
