does anyone know a good brand to buy that would be good for racing.

I bought the odessy http://www.odysseybatteries.com/battery/pc680series.htm with the bracket and will run it with no alternator if I can.

the "Rock" is by far the best battery I have found...have run multiple 24hr races with it, they are availiable through BSR products.

I've just spent a few hours researching batteries.

Braille, Odyssey and Rock Racing all appear to be great batteries.


Another one to consider is the Westco Miata Battery. It's fairly cheap, light and is a AGM (Absorbed Glass Matt) battery.

WestCo Miata Battery

Originally I wanted to go with the WestCo battery and mount it in the rear of the car.
The problem was finding a battery mount that would fit it. Rock Racing has one that may fit, but I ultimately went with an Odyssey.

The Odyssey PC680MJT is about 3 1/8 inches wide x 7 1/4 long x 7 3/8 inches tall.

The billet mount for it is only slightly larger.

I've just ordered the battery and mount, and will be checking to see if it will fit on the frame rail that the battery tray was attached to.

It appears that the PC680MJT will fit there, but I won't know for sure until I get the mount and battery. If it does fit, there won't be much need to relocate the battery, as I primarily want to do that for space reasons.

If it doesn't, then I guess I will need longer battery cable.

The Rock Racing batteries are probably pretty good. They are rather spendy though. I also wanted to try mounting on the frame rail to avoid running cable.

If I were to mount it in the trunk, I would have probably just got the WestCo battery, and this Rock Racing mount, as its dimensions are pretty close to the WestCo battery's.

I have run odyssey style battery's for many years in various formula cars due to there small size and wight however since moving into sports cars I was faced with reliability problems and capacity problems(hot engine which has! to start) which led me to the rock... I have never had a problem with them and for me the cost is far out weighed by the performance for a AGM style battery. however recently I have been doing some testing with a newer variant on a LIPO style battery and see this as taking over in the very near future, currently the cost's are a bit high($1000) :) however when talking a battery that can crank a heat soaked V8 for days and recharge in minutes oh and weigh a 1/6th that of a comparable AGM it's pretty easy to justify...hell try shedding 20lbs off a competitive race car for less.

Is that about an average price? My redtop failed on me after about 4 months, so I don't want to deal with Optima anymore. But I'm not looking for the lightest of the light battery to put in the back, so I'm thinking a 22lb Dualast Miata battery would probably suit me well too, right?

Just get an Optima Sealed gel cell and mount it behind the passenger seat with a remote Batt mount kit and call it a day.
