AutoX FD in Super Stock Anyone?
 

Anyone still running this car in SS?
Just curious.

DamonB was, last I heard. Trouble is, running a car *that* stock gets to be a pain. So I don't think the list is very long.

I run in ASP now, since SS requires that you leave the stock pre-cat in place. In most clubs nobody would feel cheated if you have a downpipe on your car, but if you're that casual about it I would run in ASP and have a look at the numbers in SS anyway.

When it comes down to really competing, the FD isn't competitive at the national level. But still a great car to drive.

let me post my alignment specs and see what people think:

front:
-3 camber, 3/32 toe out, caster....hmmm.. I think its 3.5?

Rear:
-2.3 camber, 1/8 toe in

Tri point sway bar:
one setting back from full soft.

Koni double adjustable with stock springs. Settings ??? dont really know yet.

Its hard to want to mod a stock R1 with 38k miles on it.
But ASP would not be to far away from stock.
I hear its rough for our cars in that class aswell.

Alignment specs don't mean much when we don't know what tires you use!

You don't have to mod. But you should consider a replacement radiator, AST, precat, etc. The "reliability mod" mentality would have you putting all aftermarket versions of those parts in, but you can certainly replace them with really good OEM parts. Unfortunately things like precats are insanely expensive from Mazda and really low mileage ones are very scarce.

The only class where FDs are competitive is SM2. Check the cover of Sportscar this month, nuff said.

Freshley rebuilt Koni double adjustable, I think I mentioned that already.

Well, if anyone needs one, I still have my old pre-cat with <40k on it. It was in fine shape when I replaced it with the M2 downpipe many years ago.

But shipping it would be the major cost here. That sucka's heavy!

I still see plenty of FD's in both SS and SM2, they are pretty competitive. They seem to have a hard time keeping up with the Lotuses and Vettes in SS though

I think the FD should be move to AS, the SS class is getting faster cars all the time (Lotus, Z06, maybe the new ZR-1?)

Although in my first event in this car I managed get a 1st in SS beating three other Z06. But nationally, I just dont think so.

As a member on the SEB and the last driver of a SS RX7 to win Nationals, I understand your frustration. I, too, wanted to see the car moved to AS along with the Vettes that I ran against back in the day, when the C5Z06 came along. The problem is that the RX7 would be the car to have in AS, and making a 15 year old, rare, and difficult to maintain in stock form (let alone find in stock form) the car to have, would kill a very popular class that has 4 cars that can all win Nationals (S2000, C4, Solstice GXP, and STi) Other than the C4, you can still buy all the other 3 new. The last time I ran the RX7 was at a 2001 Pro Solo in El Toro, CA. I had just replaced every bushing on the car and gotten a set of new turbos. The course was perfectly in the power band for our car with lots of high speed slaloms. I won the overall Challenge beating John Ames in his new C5Z06. But, I had lost the class by a few hundredths on a perfect course for an RX7 with the most optiminally settup RX7 at the time. John was still on stock shocks and it was the first event in the car for him. I ended up buy a Yellow 2001 Z06 2 weeks later when I got back to Texas, and raced it for about 4 years until we got the 20B into old faithful. I hope this shows that the car can compete with the C5 Z06. But it is not quite as good. I had a long run at the top. It don't forsee it moving out of SS. Hope this may shed some light on the subject and history. Come play in SM2. I will give you all the advice you need to build a capable car.

I had the red R1 at El torro this year.
Regionally I think I might do ok this year.
I would love to have an SM2 7 but its hard to touch a stock R1 with 38k on it, for now anyways.
The GT3 seems to be the car for SS, anyone have 107k?
But its kind of fun beating Z06's with a 15yr old car.

awesome cars. I remember last year at El torro these two cars at the end of the day and the 3 ft flames shooting out the exhausts.

I can totally understand not wanting to modify your car.
BTW, GT3 that are legal for stock are in the $60's. Still not "cheap". The new GT3 is currently on the exclusion list.
I hear that the flame show at dusk in El Toro was pretty cool. I wish we had video of those runs. It was hard to see the course it was so dark!

How about some alignment settings to start out with?

My car is in SM2, though I doubt it will ever be competitive at a national level, but I like to have some fun at the local level.

I have 285/30/18 V710's all around. Considered the staggered approach but decided against it. Just rolled the fenders yesterday and now need to do some alignment.

Current suspension is ST sways front and rear, Koni yellows with GC setup and 550/450 front/rear springs. Spring are somewhat soft for this application, but work nicely on the track.

It is a given that it will require more camber than for track/street tires, but I just need a good starting point.
