Bill,

Haven't been to a Mazdadrivers event in years. They still putting 1000 cars in each run group?

Be fast, be safe.

^^^

Make that 1000 Miatas. On the Grand Course.

Fritz Flynn 06-11-10 09:27 AM

Forget about Mazda and the 1000 miata$ and join me in July with BMW :D

However I sure do like that grand E course

Brent Dalton 06-11-10 09:50 AM

I did the Grand East course with MazdaDriverS last year and it wasn't bad. I've emailed Dave Nugent in regards to instructing for them and have never heard back. Fritz, what weekend is the BMW event? Might possibly check it out depending on when it is.

I've also emailed Dave many times in the past and my understanding is he has his hands full with enlisting instructors from the Mazdadrivers club alone but have also heard of many other instructors getting invited who aren't affiliated with the club so with that said I'm still left confused

It's july 2nd through the 4th so HURRY because it's filling up fast. I'll vouche for you on the instructor side of things and they may need to take a check ride with you on Friday. Friday is for the instructors only to learn the line and blow out the cobwebs so we'll get tons of quality track time.

The uphill section of the N course is SUPER FUN.

Brent Dalton 06-11-10 10:47 AM

Cool, I'll shoot them an email and see. I drove the N Course back in Feb and had alot of fun... until my engine went boom.

Well, got back from the MazdaDrivers event this past weekend. Personally I had a great time, but some other drivers gave it mixed reviews. Some of my notes:

It was hot. Very hot.

There was a pretty big mix of cars, and not a lot of Miatae. Nor was it dominated by Vettes like it was a couple years ago. Coolest car on the track? My vote goes for the red Ferrari 308gt4 running in the novice group.

It looked like they had issues with having a) lots of experienced drivers, b) lots of very novice drivers, and c) not many in the middle. A few fairly quick drivers got thrown down into the bottom two run groups where there were enough novices to where the trains formed quickly and were quite long and very slow. General irritation ensued.

I was in the yellow group (adv-intr) and found it a bit surprising when they told us "pass anywhere with a point". At other events I have been at (including other MazdaDrivers) this is usually reserved for the instructors and red groups, with yellow being given a more liberal choice of short straights. No big deal, but I just found it a little odd.

For the first time in 4 years, I forgot to check my hood pins before setting out. Almost made it to Turn-1 before the world went black. :( Thankfully the windshield wasn't damaged so I pulled off in a safe spot behind the T1 flag station, persuaded the aluminum hood back into some semblance of its former shape, pinned it back on and completed the rest of the session. :D

My next great challenge for the FC will be...... wiring!!! More specifically it will be figuring out why I have a current leak that drains the battery if I leave it hooked up and why I blew the dash "meter" fuse twice while out on the track. Wish me luck.

Just signed up for the Chin event at Watkins Glen, Sept. 6-7 (mon-tues). Can't wait.

Would love it if anybody wanted to join, but the following Fri-Sun is the vintage grand prix festival and race, so hotel space really close to the track will be limited. I'm staying at Granny's at this point, but might split w/ someone if they decide to come.

Brent Dalton 07-13-10 10:27 PM

I wish I could make it, but I just moved to South Georgia and the Army is back to heavily regulating my life for a while. One of these days I'll make it to Watkins Glen.

Fritz, how was the BMWCCA event over the 4th of July weekend?

ptrhahn 07-14-10 09:37 AM

I'm rocking the Seat Time at Summit Point on July 19th as well.

BMW event was awesome but my engine finally gave up Saturday so I came home early. Running 1.38s easy on the N course with the old HOOS :icon_tup:

DAMN I love this CAR (take out the center piece of that sentence as needed) :D

Pete,
I may drive up in the daily driver and hang with you :icon_tup:

On the brake pads I'll go until the meat is a hair thicker than the backing plate and then toss.

COOL.

I'm pretty sure Jessica is coming, and maybe my dad (for a ride-along). Might be tight on those pads... I dunno.

Peter, Josh (Silver7) and I are strongly considering the WGI/Chin event in September. I haven't been there in 5 years. Will let you know once it becomes official.

ptrhahn 07-14-10 02:22 PM

Ramon,
I used to go every year on this date when it was Trackmasters, but it's been a couple years for me too. Hope I see you guys there.

ptrhahn 08-04-10 08:52 AM

Ramon (and Josh),
There are still plenty of spots open for Chin WGI. Looks like the overall numbers are low enough that you have a decent shot at a garage spot too.

Is anyone contemplating the MazdaDrivers event on VIR Full Aug 28-29? Normally that a no-go for me b/c it falls on my anniversary weekend. But this year the wife is traveling on business that weekend, so I'm going to be available.

I think that event and possibly the 3-day FSR-PCA event (southx2 then full) in September will be it for me this year.

That's too tight to my WGI event, but I WILL be back to VIR this fall, maybe with Audi or the Marque Madness.

Anyone on here head up to Road Atlanta this past weekend for the NASA event?

I was there in spectator form and had a blast. Saw quite a few RX's... FB's, FC's (one with an LS1), FD's, and RX-8's. Some FAST rotaries for sure.

Brent Dalton 08-09-10 04:04 PM

I was at Road Atlanta. I was with the RX8 guys(as well as the LS FC) in the motor home. I normally have a yellow or silver FD at events but I've been having transmission problems so the car was not there. Cam Worth and Pettit crew were down this weekend as well.

BigIslandSevens 08-09-10 04:13 PM

I was there as well for my first NASA event. I was in the gray FD. It was a blast meeting lots of rotary track addicts. Some really fast cars there as well. I can't wait till december.

Thanks again Brent for the help with my brakes. I am rebuilding the fronts with all new hardware, replacing the rotors, getting some good track pads. What are your opinions on the DBA slotted rotors? What's your choice for stock replacements? I don't see a blank DBA option. I am tearing the rears apart and see what's up with them. Blowing threw the lines etc.

Cool! I talked with Russ for a bit about his LS FC. Looked to be put together pretty well and gave me some good ideas about mine. Wished I could've talked longer and met more people but it looked like everyone was strapped for time as it was the end of the day.
