Any New Mexico (or nearby) Road Racers?

If any of you road racers are near New Mexico, Southwest Motorsports club in Albuquerque hosts several events throughout the year at Sandia Motor Speedway's 1.6 mile 14 turn road race track. As you can imagine, there are a couple very tight autocross like turns with many interesting (technical) corners and areas thereof. Top speed around 120 mph. Track record in the 1:25 area (nice Porsche 914 on rails).

We always invite and welcome just about everyone - workers, students, lappers, drivers, racers, spectators, and sponsors! Next event is our "Crash & Burn" school March 13, 2004 at the track. Next race is April 3-4 in the Miata Mania. Details of all club activities at our web site in my signature (assuming I set it up properly).

Our club even offers noontime lapping of 20 minutes for $20 behind a pace car. A great means of testing the waters. From there, a driver can attend our school and enter a lapping event which allows about 1 to 2 hours per day on track with passing on front and back straight only. From there some drivers upgrade to race prepped cars a real race events.

There IS Road Racing in NM!

Marc,

Have no idea of what your questions might be. But let me review a bit about SWMS. We are the first club to host auto road racing events at Sandia Motor Speedway. Other clubs do cycle and kart racing and the Legends group does Legends cars there too.

A typical event will have several car groups on the track at different times. Group 1. Student group for drivers school students. Every event includes a drivers school. We try to have only 1 student for 1 instructor although sometimes there are 2 S to 1 I. Group 2. Lapping group for both students and street car drivers. Lapping group is for NON race prepared cars - no cage, no 6 point harness, no radical mods allowed nor required - any legal street car allowed. You'll see mustangs to porsche to mini to honda to crx to... Group 3. Open wheel race cars. Group 4. Under 2.5 L race cars. Group 5. Over 2.5 L race cars.

Early registration costs $195 for 2 days and $125 for 1 day. 1 driver in 1 car is allowed per registration. 2 drivers in 1 car = 2 registrations. 1 driver in 2 cars = 2 registrations.

Our events are covered by liability insurance, have corner workers, include an ambulance and wrecker. They are controlled and managed by the volunteer workers. Instruction is both classroom, conversation, and on track. Insrtuctors will ride with students and sometimes take students with them in either their own car or the students.

As in all events, more workers and cars are needed, invited, and welcomed. Work 2 events and you get a free club membership ($40 value). Work 3 more events you get a free annual banquet ticket ($35+ value). Work areas are tech, pit & grid, timing, steward, corner marshall, head of specialty, announcing, more.

Club meeting is March 23 at Coaches on Central. Next event April 3-4 at Sandia. Sign in and on site registration from about 7:30 AM SAturday and Sunday. Friday at about 3 or 4PM will also be tech inspection. Ken Adams is shief of tech. His # is listed in the clubs site if you want to work that area. Other work areas can be assigned Saturday AM. Workers should talk to another worker to make certain they are prepped for a day at Sandia - fun and work!

All times are GMT -5. The time now is 12:21 AM.
