anti-lag, WTF????
 

Saw this WRX in a mag tday and it had a anti-lag switch, fer spooling up the turbo to get full boost at idle and have one helluva launch. (it was a autoxcar) Just wondering how it works and if theres anyway to do this on a FC or FD. Shit, it wud be nice to have full boost at idle, or even partial boost on my Tii.

Ahh , good ole antilag. anti lag is this:
when you let off the gas, it retards the ignition timing and dumps fuel and basicly blows a really big explosion out the exhaust to keep the turbo spooled up. this has been around for a long time in rally cars, hence them backfiring all the time, thats not poor tuning it is the antilag. this works great but it is very very hard on components, you will eventually hurt something bad, blow the manifold off, turbo apart, crush a valve. it deosnt work at idle, that will uckfay the motor up. usually it wont work under 3500 rpm. i dont think it would be a good idea to use on an fd.

They replace turbines after every event, and they already run super high strenght ceramic turbines. It just destroys the turbines.

What you describe RexRyder does NOT sound like ant-lag. Anti-lag is for between shifts, and does not help make boost off idle.

You sound like your describing a simple two-step setup. Basically its two revlimiters. Your normal rev limiter, and a second step, ussally much lower on street cars, used for launching.

With the clutch depresed redline is say 4500rpms. Just floor the gas, and bouch off the limiter and boost builds. Plus you take some of the error out of leaving the line...
MSD and other ignitions make simple 2-steps. ussally run about $50...

Your saying that this guy is wrong? That Ramana (rally driver for Subaru) isnt describing anti-lag?

I've never heard of an anti-lag system that works at idle...
Although i guess it could if you threw the timming WAY off at idle and got it to spool the turbo.

Now did Ramana write the article, or is this the reporters words, becuase most sports car rags are horriable with technicall details... The fact that hes flipping a switch at idle makes it sound more like a 2-step than an 'anti-lag' setup...

You can use anti lag while sitting still, I dont know if it would work good at idle, you might have to bring the rpms up some but drag racers use it so that they can launch at full boost. The switch is wired to the clutch to when you pull the clutch everything goes back to normal. It actually works anytime you have your foot in the clutch, which would be between shifts, sitting still waiting to launch, ect, ect.

The Power FC when used with the datalog it and the Haltech both have this feature. No one uses it (maybe some pro type racers) because like mentioned earlier its hard on the turbo. If you only used it during launch at a event you might be ok. Ralley and road race drivers use it a lot and they are also spooling thier turbo to prob 35psi instead of 12-17 like most of us would. I'd imagine they need a much larger explosion. A drag racer is going to hit anti lag 4 times at most and they will be extremely brief except the initial launch. Ralley drivers and road race driver prob hit it hundreds of times thru the course of one race.

I think the WRX had something different.. Not Anti-lag. What RexRyder describes is called anti-lag.

What it sounds like is on the WRX, is Pre-spooling.

i'm not completely clear on what it is exactly, but, as spoautos suggested, the power FC will do it if you have a datalogit to program it. it can't be done via a commander.
