ok so this is my first season racing and am looking forward to this season but also getting ready for next year also. My Question is where are you first gen guys getting your race tires? My budget aint big this year and not looking like it will get much bigger next so I am on a budget.

Are you road racing? Auto-X? Drag? Timetrials? Rally-X?

What class are you in and what size wheels do you have to put tires on?

Edit: I'm guessing by you mod list your in CSP?

For 13" you could go with...

Yea i have the stock 13" I am racing in EMOD. I am thinking about going with the sumitomo's but would love to get a pair of hoosiers.

I love my Khumo 710s.
They stick GREAT, last almost twice as long as Hoosiers and fit well on a 7" rim.

Keep this phrase in mind when shopping, "There is no good deal on bad tires" Make sure you hear of someone who likes the tire you're buying. Better yet see what the fast guys are running, and see what the slow guys are running, choose accordingly.
Can you run slicks in Mod? Get some used ones, check around there is a guy up in Wisconsin IIRC that deals in all sizes. Look for ads in the back of racing mag's.

I wouldn't worry about tires so early on in the game. Just drive on whatever it is you have right now and see how close you can get to the competition.

Adjust settings like tire pressure to get a feel for how your cornering grip changes. R-comps, unlike streets, hide rookie mistakes on course because they give you no warning on when they reach their limits.

The difference between a good set of street tires and r-comps should be about 2-3 seconds. If you're lagging behind by more than that, it's not necessarily the car.

Besides, Hoosiers won't last the entire session even if one were to drive careful on them. I've seen Mini-Coopers cord them on run #5. Save your money for seat time.

I'd say to stay on street tires for the time being. Concentrate on driving better and having fun.

I agree. I've got one autocross season under my belt, and street tires are much easier to 'feel' as a driver. They squeal, they have nice easy breakaway, and they are less sensitive to temperature, rain, and gravel than a slick tire.

I bought a set of half-worn Victoracers about halfway thru last year and I wasn't that much better with them. The were harder to feel the limits of traction - which makes me sound like a bumbling fisted driver, but the truth is that autocross courses come at you *so* fast that it takes a lot of practice to utilize the capabilities of your equipment. The more performance your equipment has, the more difficult the learning curve.

That said, don't use a junk tire. Get a good summer tire - check out the review in this months GRM for some good suggestions.

I am plaining on staying on street tires this year I am tring to get everything together for next year this aint cheap and planing ahead really helps. I aint sure is race tires are legal in EM but if not I ll move over to SM2 I am in it for fun and to build my skills.

Yes, race tires are legal for mod, I'd recommend the v710s like someone had suggested, they tend to last a lot longer than the hoosiers. They are damn quick and sticky too.

appears that the 710's dont come in 13's.

Yes they do!
They come in one size 215/50/13 and they are great!
They fit fine on 13 by 7 rims (my Hoosier like a wider rim).
