??? about relocating FD battery to bin
 

Hey guys I think I want to relocate my battery to the storage bin behind the drivers seat. Any of you guys done that without buying a kit. What all is needed and what all batteries will fit? Currently I'm running a small Honda battery that alot smaller than stock but I dont think it will fit in the storage bin....havent tried though.

How much pita is this??? Do I pretty much have to buy a kit??? I can prob fab some stuff up if its not too hard

Stephen, I'm about to do this mod soon as well. From previous posts, and info. from the big list I've found the best solution is in the Passenger side bin. You can build the setup yourself, just buy a good sealed battery. You should never use a non-sealed battery in the car. I can't decide between the Hawker pc925 or an Optima Red top battery myself. As for wire buy some -2 or -0 gauge cable from a welding supply store. It's just a good as the expensive stereo cable, but much much cheaper. I'm going to just have a stainless steel tray welded to the floor in the bin and secure the battery with a tiedowns, just to be legal at the track. Make sure you ground the battery well, and use good connections. I'm also installing a circuit breaker next to the battery.

Why behind the passenger seat??? Is there any reason other than to improve weight balance?

Have you heard of any way to do it without hacking up the bin???

Those are the same batteries I'm looking at, isnt the Optima Red top the same battery thats used in the www.N-tech.net kit? Do you have any specs on it like cca or lifespan?

Why is it better to have the battery under the seat? More room under the hood or does it do something else?

It makes room for things under the hood, like a bigger intercooler. And it will also slightly improve the weight distribution.

Stephen, when mounting it inside the car, the pass. side just for weight distribution. Besides I don't really use the bins on a daily basis. I would NOT relocate the battery without cutting up the bins. If you don't want to cut them at all, the N-tech BMK is probably a better solution for you. If you move the battery and do NOT fasten the battery down, it can caues a major safety problem. I wouldn't want to be in an accident and have a 20lb projectile flying around the cabin of the car. More realistically you'll have problems with any race track inspection. Without cutting up the bins, I don't think you can secure the batter to the car.

Another option for you would be to relocate it to the rear hatch area. There are many metal boxes in Japan for mounting back there. You can bolt the box to the frame interior, thus taking care of safety and keeping full use of your bins. Just a thought on my part.

The N-Tech kit uses the Hawker Genesis - a much smaller battery. I have that kit, and it is nicely made. However, the Hawker is a poor choice unless you drive the car daily. Mine sits for long periods of time, and this is bad for the battery. The Hawker will lose its charge in under 2 months. I have been through two of them so far. Once they run down all the way, they are dead. I am swapping mine out for an Optima in the passenger side bin.

Mine's in there and there was no hacking up the bin. I think its the PC680 now. It fits great and it's not really even secured except by friction, it has no place to move really.
