5th and 6th Sleeves
I've got to pull my intake to swap it and have a question on the 5th and 6th sleeves. It's an unported S4 NA motor with S5 rotors and soon the S5 intake.
Should I remove the sleeves entirely? Or Should I keep the sleeves and use Pineapple inserts? I did some searching but most of it pertains to street cars, this motor does not see below 5500 RPM. If I keep the sleeves, the ports will be wired open. I've read a lot on the Pineapple inserts, no need to rehash that argument. I tried calling Pineapple but couldn't get anyone on the phone, somehow I got into their VM system and it said 51 new messages. Then I got a busy signal when I tried to call back. Not sure what's up with them right now. |
Id say remove them. While your at it, remove the spring rod in the LIM that turns them also. Those rods along with the pins in the sleves would obstruct flow worse than the sleeves themselves. If the motor is never going to see low RPMs, theyre just in the way.

Unless they've changed the rules since I paid attention to IT rules, swapping to pineapple's sleeves would be an illegal modification.
Removing the stock sleeves would be legal, covered under 'removal of smog equipment' I removed the spring rod and replaced them with aluminum blanks. PaulC |

Go for the inserts. It does improve flow considerably.

jeez, what other mods did you do to turn that into a PTC car? Most of the ex PS-1 2nd gens are in PTD out here in cali.

Tough to do, you need that clipped ECU. You could ditch the metallic bushings, lose the .756 gear but still have 2 more points to get rid of. PM me if you want to discuss, would be glad to talk about 2nd Gens running PT. Back to my question, sleeves with inserts or no sleeves? I am still undecided. |

Alright, going with sleeve inserts. Got an email back from Pineapple.
Use the sleeves w/ our inserts. If allowed, when the motor is removed, consider removing the cross pin from the sleeve and fix it into position by drilling through the plate from the outside. I use a M6 x 1.00 allen set screw. I drill through the plate, sleeve, into the insert. Then install the set screw w/ loctite or similar. Then peen the screw. You can now remove the "pickle fork" from the intake air flow. |
Does Pineapple (or anyone else for that matter) have actual dyno data on the difference between running with their sleeve/insert versus no sleeve at all? I could believe a difference over the stock setup, but I have to wonder about if there is any significant improvement over open ports in the high RPM range.
