4.88 gear....where can I find this?

I did a search on the site and on the internet, but i can not seem to find one. Can you buy these new, who makes them? I would be interested in a used one if someone has one for sale. thanks!!

Hard to find as they are all custom. The 1st gen gears are used (from Mazdacomp) and the pinion is lengthened with a 2nd gen pinion. Too difficult for most machine shops nor would I trust someone who hasn't done it before. Are you sure you want a 4.88 and not a 5.12? In my research on this topic the 5.12 was more popular and only a couple dollars more. I have not ran the 4.88 but I do have a 5.12 and am very happy with it. I got lucky and bought it off another racer. I think ISC has a 5.12 right now for around $2450, expect to pay about that new and $1000+ for used if you get lucky. Contact ISC or Flatout Motorsports for a lead, I know they both have had them made. Good luck.

The above comments are for an ITS car, I believe the ideal setup for an EP car is the 4.10 rear with modified tranny gears.

Front axle of a KIA 4x4 ????? Thats what I've read somewhere. Might be a 4:77 but thats close.

yeah....I have heard about that process. Way too much coin for me at this point, if anyone has a used one for reasonable price...let me know.

Anyone else have any more info on the kia suggestion.....thanks you two!!

Kia gears are much cheaper than Mazda because there production parts.

If you find the Kia gear you'll still need to lengthen it to fit the FC carrier.

bean13 06-29-07 01:18 PM

would anyone have the application they can be found in? Cost? Any experience in doing the kia gear thing...

Thanks!!!

Kia and B2600 4x4 came with short pinion shaft like the FB/SA/RX-2/RX-3 SP. I have either a 4.44 or 4.78 in my RX-3's and FB's.

The FC's have long pinion shaft.

Where does Bean13 say he has a FC?

Ludwig has been helpin me out in many areas, he knows (and others do as well) that it is an ITS FC ('90). Unfortunatly, that means I have a long shaft....uh....pinion that is.

Question; Howcome there is no aftermarket or Mazdacomp gears for a second gen? Enough of these things are raced, and back in the day they were common I would imagine with Jolly racing, Racing Beat, Atkins Rotory, AWR, ISC and who knows how many others. So why is there nothing made for something as common and important to racing purposes as a ring and pinion set. This seems weird.

Question Two: For this do I need two pinions to splice together? Anyone know what specific applications the afformentioned ratios are from? Also, anyone have any first hand experience with having this done...what would just the splicing process cost?

Where do I find a 4:78...kia or B2600? Also, what kind of kia and what years? I will do some research and post the costs that I find.

Back in my drag racing day, Doug Nash would take a small spline top loader Ford tranie, input shaft(low gear) and weld the spline part of a big spline shaft to it. By doing this you would end up with a big spline 2:78 low gear in place of the orginal 2:32 low gear. We built 100's of these with never one failure of the welded joint. It works just fine to weld the two together. Been there / done that.

Odd this would come up at the same time....

https://www.rx7club.com/showthread.p...89#post7095789

could not get better than that!

bean13 07-02-07 02:01 PM

well, i got to excited to fast. Seems to me once I get the 3rd member from a junkyard, get a donor 2nd gen pinion, have the service to modify it ($600 from Flatout as ISC told me they no longer do it on an individual basis), and a rebuild kit, the price isnt all that much cheaper.

sigh.....the dreaded "r" word strikes again.....race.

SCCAITS 07-02-07 09:20 PM

Try posting on the IT forums, I think that will be your best bet on finding a used one.

Oval-RX7 07-09-07 08:01 PM

Anyone want to trade a 4.78 for a 4.44? Today I found a Kia Sportage in my local junkyard and the front was still intact. It's mine, as of today but I allready have a 4.88 in my FB and it's turning to many R's for oval racing at our track and I need to bring it down a 1000 rpm.
Thanks Tim

bean13 07-09-07 08:11 PM

are you looking to sell the first gen 4:88, might be a good start for me to modify.

Oval-RX7 07-10-07 08:33 AM

We are going to keep the 4.88, just looking for some other gear options for the track. Still have the 4.77 KIA though, sounds like you have to modify some to use it in the FC, bummer.

bean13 07-10-07 08:37 AM

big time bummer....
