1st gen rear Suspension
 

Hey guys just wondring what some of you guys racing 1st gens have done to the poor stock setup. My plans were to run heim joints on the lower links, watts link and new stock upper links.

I don't normally say 'search' but this has been beaten to death. You're on the right track with your thinking but in general:

Lose the watts link, run a panhard about 6" off the ground
Heim joints on lowers, make the uppers as useless as possible because the ideal set up is a Tri-Link from G-force Engineering to replace them.

If you have to deal with rules, be sure what you are doing is allowed.

Good choice, what ya got stuffed under the FC's rear? If your avatar is your car I see why you ditched the IRS.

The car has a ford 8.8 soild axle with a 3 link. The cars built for ST-1, but last season I was busy running drifting events and working. So I mostly just worked out alot of the bugs on the small track at Englishtown NJ. Motor is a buick 3.8 V6 has a 64mm turbo with a G-Force dogbox behind it. Solid axle was just to try somthing new see how it worked, But I ended up really liking the feel of the car more so then with the IRS. Also I dont break anymore rear parts.....

That engine looks like a SII 3800.

What did you get it out of?

How about a Lotus Link? Don't know exactly how much power you're running but this type of link definitely lowers your roll center substantially....It very much like a four-bar design except that the triangulated point at the differential is mounted underneath the diff instead of on top.

A lotus link would put your roll center about the same height as a properly located panhard. I have not modeled it but I suspect the length of the stock upper links would cause a lot of roll steer.

Yeah, definitely not thinking of using stock upper links. My thoughts were if he were to build a suspension from scratch. His upper link pick-up points both on the body of the car and on the axle will change completely. The roll-steer you speak of would not come into play so long as your apex point under the diff is in fact, one point & not multiple points like in the triangulated diagram in the link i placed in a previous thread.

Just to add, its a lot lighter than a panhard bar set-up. Designing this setup with multiple pickup points will also someone to taylor their anti-squat/dive tendencies.

Im not a huge fan of lotus link setup on non-tube frame car.
That being said I really like the feel of my 3 link in the fc. Setup with lower links level and upper about 8 deg down.

How low do you guys have you panhard bars set? It's about 3/4" lower then axle tube on my FC.

I have a 3 link in my FB. In my thread you can see one of the 1 1/8" aluminum links I used. My panhard bar is 43" long (42"-44" adj) and "essentially" goes from shock bolt to shock bolt.
