1st gen Carb?
 

Looking for a legal IT carb for 1st gen RX7. Prefer rebuilt, anyone recommend somebody to purchase from?

Paul Yaw, hands down. (that is, if you can get one from him, or track down one that he's done).

I'm sure Yaw was one of the first to modify the stock carb. I know he's still around, I think in Phoenix. I never hear his name much anymore. I spoke with Daryl Drummond the other day to see if he could race prep my new 48IDA and port and polish the intake. (nice guy btw) He told me he only does it for customers in conjunction with a race motor build up. It would be nice to develop a comprehensive sticky about who offers what services for the bits on our race cars.

Sterling or Carl Perez. Carl (aka RX7Carl or the dancing bannana) did my former SDJ carb and I was veeeeerrrrryyyy impressed with how it turned out

Last I heard, Sterling and Carl were in cahoots together, just two different builders

There's a Yaw carb on Ebay right now; As of February, he told a friend he was no longer doing first gen carbs....

That's the gist of what I heard, plus his website is full of other projects that I'm sure net a hell of a lot more bucks than rebuilding a damn carb. Althought I'm surprised he didn't/hasn't just hired somebody to do it like the motors.

I've run a couple different carbs on various racecars, and I always come back to the Yaw. The only carb I've ever had that could touch a Yaw was one built by a buddy of mine, but I got every last RX7 part (and carb) from him about 2 years ago. One of these days I need to rebuild one just to say I did...

heh... I don't touch them! I always lose parts when I do, and without faily, they run like crap. I had heard the rumors about Yaw , but my buddy had cash in hand, and a carb boxed to ship & Yaw turned him down, that about sealed it for me.
Not sure where I'm going next... SDJ maybe? Perhaps Dave Lemon/ Mazadtrix...

Sterling bought a Yaw carb several years ago, and studied it and built a few more like it. Now that Yaw does not want to service carbs, Sterling has picked up the 1st gen Carb market that Yaw has abandoned. Before he started doing Mazda carbs for money, Sterling was first a jewelry maker by trade, so he is very good at intricate, detailed workmanship.

tis a pitty, i have a yaw carb and wouldn't trade it for anything...

It's interesting that those who have actually obtained a Yaw carb seem to really like them. The difficult part is actually obtaining one. Years ago, I attempted to buy one, as I had heard that they were the hot setup for IT/Pro-7 racing. I sent him several e-mails, then called him several times, then sent him some snail mail just in case he was allergic to electronic commerce. I waited a couple of weeks, then repaeated the above again several times. No answer. I talked to someone in racing circies that knew him, and he said that I needed to pack up my carb, send it to him along with a check, and that when he got enough of them built up to make it worth his time he would build them all at once and send them out. Could be two weeks, could be six months. I needed to get a carb as the race season was fast approaching, I didn't have a working race carb, and I didn't intend to sit out any races for that reason. I was lucky enough to find out that a local builder made "better than Yaw" carbs who I could actually talk to, and would build it on MY time schedule. Result? I had the local guy build it, at a competitive to Yaw price, and successive dyno tests indicate that it makes a couple HP more than Yaw's. Two months after the season had started, Paul Yaw returned my call and said he was ready to build some carbs so I should get it down to him. He seemed like a nice guy when I talked to him, but anybody who's customer service requires me to miss half the race season waiting for a callback just isn't going to get my business.

Talk to Mike Haag at the track..hes the Norcal hookup for stuff like this. But find yourself an 84/85 core first..

Im set to drop on a carb from him next race, and swap in a new tranny he's run thru for me, mines got the death grind...which means in lap #8 of 9, I lose 4th gear and have to drive "creatively" to fend off passing in 1 and 14.

Heh, not a bad idea Geoff! I need haag to build me a motor first... ;)

Forgot about Geoff, how is he doing. Does anybody have a number for him? I had his dad do work for me when I was just starting out with racing the Rotary when I was in High School. Nice Family.
