18x9.5 w/285x30x18 on FD
Has anyone here autox'd with this combination of wheel and tire?
These will fit (with the proper offset) according to the FD wheel fitment spreadsheet. But fitting and working well are not necessarily the same thing. Just wondering if anyone has run into issues racing this size wheel and tire in an FD with stock fender wells. |
To give you some extra data, our car runs 285/30/18 A6 Hoosier front on 10.5 inch wheels with rolled fender lip and 2 1/4" coilovers at 2.4 degrees camber with no problem. I am thinking on going to 11" wheels as camber will be 3 degrees with adjustable upper arms next year.
The rear has 315/30/18 A6 Hoosiers on 10.5 inch wheels. Again, with rolled fender lip and 2 1/4" coilover. The rear longitudinal trailing arm is aftermarket, and moved inboard as far as possible. The tires still rub the arm, inner fender well and outer fender lip, just barely under 1.35G loads. It is amazing how much the tire flexes under load, as the static clearance to the trailing arm is about 1/2". Tried to go to an 11" wheel and the stretched tire was just a little to big. If you are running 285's on the rear, you should have no problem on clearance. Erik Strelnieks |
To echo Erik, those should fit. I ran some 18x9.5's with 285/30 Hoosiers (S03's) a few years ago and they fit front/rear without any issues. You might have to work with the fender liner attachment for the fronts, but should be minor. That was with SSR 18x9.5 (I think they were +38 offset).

Thanks for the input!

Hi,
Erik, what wheels are u running? jkstill: I have some "borrowed" 18x10 CCW wheels with tall 285 Pirelli slicks, and I was surprised how well the fenders swallowed in those tires. No rubbing anywhere so far, shaved rear lips. |
I bought SSR comps 18x9.5 +50mm all around and plan to run 285/30/18 v710 all around next season. If Andy and Erik could write back with their heights from bottom of fender to floor, that would be awesome :) I was at 26 inches this season, but will be 25 front, 25.5 rear next season, approx, depending on corner weight results.

Echo of Andy and eric: I run 9.5x 18 Enkei RPF1s +38 all around with 285/30R18s road course and autox with Tokicos and the Ground Control coilover kit. I had to roll both the front and rear lips and adjust liner mounting as mentioned but since then no issues. I am not running significant camber so that may be why I had to roll both ends. I have not run stickys yet so I do not know if they would present addisional issues.

25 1/4" Left Rear (315/30/18) There is a 0.7" diameter difference between the 2 sizes. |
Thanks for all the input.
18x9.5 38mm RP-F1's with 285/30/18 V710's are on order. |
jkstill - i think the 38mm with the 285 will be very close on stock fenders. have you confirmed they fit? i don't think they will fit stock fenders. i bought 50mm's for next season but don't have tires yet.

can't edit above post but here is a pic i took when i tried putting 17x9.5s +42mm with 275's:
http://209.177.55.37/images/rx7/275s...s/IMG_2859.jpg 26" ride height and i was too concerned about rubbing so i never tried it. |

Close is ok. Others have confirmed doing this with stock fenders, albeit with some fender rolling and liner mounting adjustment. There's a liner mounting screw that will give clearance issues. I'll figure out how to deal with that when I see it.
The angle of the picture exaggerates it a bit - the tires stick out about 3/4 of an inch on the stock fender. 2.5 degrees of camber and rolling the fender should take care of it. |
sweet. pls post more:) that shit looks like it is sticking out five inches LOL . i have a black fd too. are you gonna roll the fenders yourself? kvn

Planning to roll the fenders myself.
There's a local guy that will rent me his Eastwood Fender Roller Have to make serious progress on some other projects though before doing much more with my car. |
any updates

I have a research project and presentation to put together before I can do an more serious work on the car. Though I did make a camber measuring tool from 10 inch Craftsman laser level, Riv-nuts, set screws and a piece of pre-drilled angle steel. :) |

The fenders were rolled, the wheels installed, car aligned. After a couple of events to learn how to drive the car again, it was indeed fast. Some pics: http://s532.photobucket.com/albums/e...pt%207%202008/ |
can you please take a closer pic of the set up (rims tires and rolled fenders.) i cant really tell from the autocross pics.

I'll get one when it comes back down off the jackstands. Had the wrong P/S fluid in and had to change it. |
