13BT Road Racers...
What kind of oil and water temps do you want see? What AFRs do you aim for in tuning to keep the motor alive? I can't find my old notebook with all this in it. :-(
Please and thank you. |

Please and thank you. Water Temp: 205*-220* (Koyo) Oil Temp: 200*-215* (Dual FC Oil Coolers) As far as AFR's I really don't keep track of that while driving on track, I had my tunner tune it for 11.5:1 under full boost, and I never play with that and my motor has survived about 8 track weekends. I also add about five gallons of 110 Octane to my tank before the first session just in case i get to much boost. Hope that helps a little. |
Yup. That helps. Definitely interested in what people think are "max safe" values for all of these. And EGTs.
My car has the MazdaComp radiator, and a large Setrab oil cooler, so hopefully that's enough. I'm a bit worried the intercooler is mounted in front of the radiator, but I think with appropriate air management it should be okay. I was thinking 11:1 AFR but if 11.5:1 is considered safe that's good to know! |
In my FC I see water at 190 and oil up to 230. I have a stock FC oil cooler and a large 26"x19" aluminium dual pass radiator. I'm running 14 psi for about 400 rwhp. The car is driven hard for up to hour long races. Up top I'm down as low as 10.5:1 afr. It stinks, but it does seem to help keep the temps down. EGT's are up to 1650 when pushing hard. The car pulls hard without issue. A few years ago I had a lean condition under partial throttle and had the 2000 degree EGT pegged. The turbo didn't survive.

im making 470hp and see 200-210 water and oil, using giant dual pass rad and dual fc oil coolers. oh im running 11.0-11.5 afrs. with these numbers ive had no reliability issues

I like to see no more than 100C water, no more than 60C AIT, and am tuned to 11.4... don't have an oil temp guage.
|
I try and keep oil and water at 200*...I am comfortable with water as high as 220-230 but anything over 210 on the oil is cause for concern. Using AFCO dual pass radiator and twin mocal coolers. My engine is a Cosmo 13B-RE but same rules apply I think.

Thanks everybody. Glad I checked. On the LSx motors people don't get really upset until you see sustained 300F on the oil and I couldn't remember the danger zone for the 13B.

Where is everybody taking the temp reading at? It is the easiest to take it as it goes back into the motor since most of the aluminum under the filter blocks have a plug for it. I think it was racing beat who always told me to take the reading coming out of the motor. It makes sense because it tells you what the motor is doing not the cooler. But you can't use one set of temps if you are measuring some place else.

I take temp and pres at the pedestal using one of the filter spacer blocks. Yes, oil is at its coolest there. You just have to adjust mentally. I see around 160F there on the track, which is about the bottom of the operational range (I have dual stock coolers and an NA car).
Some folks measure at the pan (use the space where the level sensor normally is), while others use a tapped banjo bolt fitting one the oil cooler line. -bill |
