PFC in S5: FD igniter or Coil mod?

So to install the PFC in to an S5, the ignition has to be modified...

The question here is which is a better option (i.e.: is there a gain from one, or the other?):

FD Igniter > http://www.banzai-racing.com/fd_igni...all_how-to.htm

FC Trailing coil mod > http://www.banzai-racing.com/FC_coil_install_how-to.htm

Not really sure about this one, but Banzai says it's so, so...

Banzai-Racing 04-02-11 05:33 AM

You must do one or the other to install the FD PFC in the S4 or S5 and have the trailing coils fire properly.

There is not a "better" option, the easier/cheaper option is to simply source another trailing coil pack and mod the FC igniter.

TrboSpdAnt 04-02-11 10:51 AM

This isn't a case of having to source the parts, so much as trying to find out the benefit of both options. (As you can see from the pair of links, I'm going by you guys' site, since that's where my harness is coming from anyway.)

Glad I know this, though!

Thanks!

There is no electrical/mechanical benefit of one over the other, only ease of sourcing parts and installation. We developed the FC trailing coil mod so that people would not have to source the FD igniter and connector.

Awesome! The sourcing of the parts isn't a problem, so much, seeing as I've got enough bits, at the shop, to build an S5.5 in an FD - but I can certainly see the problem, that could arise!

I ordered my PFC adapter and nice selection of other bits (FD trans and diff braces, FC strut bars, S5 OMP delete kit, etc.), earlier this afternoon. I'll make sure to direct any questions I've got, regarding, to your pm box.

Can't wait till everything comes...

It's like X-MAS! Woo-HOO!

I had banzai mod my fc coil and it has worked flawlessly for 2+ years for what its worth.

TrboSpdAnt 04-03-11 12:00 AM

Sweet - What was the cost on that, to have them do it?

Banzai-Racing 04-03-11 08:43 AM

We have everything you ordered in stock, you will have the parts on Tuesday. It is better to email then to PM, you will get faster responses.

We charge $100 to do the FC coil mod. That includes return shipping. You have to supply the trailing coil pack and additional igniter.

My opinion is that it is better to install the FC trailing coil in cars that have the 13b/t, it maintains the factory look and can easily be undone if needed. I installed the FD igniter in our shop vert simply because I installed the FD coils on the 13b-re Cosmo engine.

I saw the 'RE' in the pics on the site. Looks bad-ass - you guys have more pictures of that car?

Banzai-Racing 04-03-11 11:34 AM

There are hundreds of pics of both the shop cars, just click on "Banzai Cars" from our home page http://www.banzai-racing.com/

D-OH! Didn't see that link. :facepalm2:

Damn... You guys did a TON on that car!

I noticed it's got a Twin Power (which led me to the product link) and I saw you all carry the MSD 6A. Where can I find instructions on how to install it (The 6A)?

Banzai-Racing 04-03-11 04:13 PM

There is how-to somewhere on the internet, it is just 2 wires to the leading coil and 2 wire to the battery.

TrboSpdAnt 04-03-11 05:37 PM

Oh.... For some reason the only write-up I found made things A LOT more difficult sounding. Any kind of installation mod seeing's how I'm doing the coil-mod?

Is there a gain benefit/ preference between the Twin-Power and the 6A?

Banzai-Racing 04-04-11 06:31 AM

The trailing coil modification does not come into play when installing an MSD 6A on the leading coil.

I prefer the HKS TP it is more compact and amplifies all three coils. The coil modification does not effect the TP installation, it wires in just like it normally would.

All my toys came in about 15 mins ago. Everything was in place and in great shape!

Too bad I have to wait to add more feedback - +1 for each of the items! I get in to the shop, today, it's assembly time!

I never did find the install instructions for that 6A. I mean I THOUGHT I did, but if it really is THAT simplified, the ones I found are obviously NOT the correct ones.

Any help?

Also: How'd you all go about using the FD coils on the 'RE' project?

Banzai-Racing 04-05-11 02:59 PM

Oops 4 wires to the coil.

We mounted the FD coils in the stock location on the block.

TrboSpdAnt 04-06-11 01:24 AM

HA! Yeah, this was NOT the write-up I found.

Awesome! Thanks for the link!

live4boost 04-07-11 04:23 PM

I did the modded FC coil option for a local guy and its been working well for him. I have another set to do for my FC when I decide to finish it up one day.

TrboSpdAnt 04-07-11 08:27 PM

Well, since the mod get great reviews, it's the mod and 6A.

TrboSpdAnt 05-09-11 11:26 PM

Mod is done and 6A is in place!

Found a PERFECT spot between upper core support and front bumper support... Protected and convenient location! Now it's just wiring in for relocated battery!
