cant get datalogit to work

I have the beige box and using a serial to usb converter.

Ive installed the FD3S FC Edit software for the beige box and the usb drivers (i think)... i have all the files, just dont know how to install them.

When i open FD3S Edit and error comes up saying "default.dat is not available" and then when i try to press READ ALL or anything i get a error "interface not responding" for everything i try.

can someone give me the software/drivers for the setup i have and directions how to install?

i have windows XP SP1

my connections on the datalogit are
1. white wire from location unknown to the AN1 port
2. wire from PFC to datalogit
3. wire form datalogit to PFC commander
4. serial to usb adaptor and wire to computer

thanks

S1: When i open FD3S Edit and error comes up saying "default.dat is not available.
A1: YOU have to put a dat(map) into the software folder and have it named default.dat. Did you read page 10 of the DL instructions?

S2: when i try to press READ ALL or anything i get a error "interface not responding" for everything i try.
A2: this only works when the DL is successfully connected to the PFC and your laptop. Your USB setup might not be correct. Search this forum as I use serial ports.

S3: i have windows XP SP1
A3: Same as my tuning only dedicated laptop stripped of all other sofware and non essential services.

Are all my connections right?

The car came with the DL so im just trying to figure it out.

The car was tuned with it so it should work. I dont want to put a map or anything because im afraid ill mess up the tune.

ALL im trying to do is use my laptop as a detailed monitoring version of the commander.

Most likely your USB port setup/software is WRONG!

Care to help out on that subject?

what brand and model laptop do you have? version of windows?

this is why I have a late 90s laptop with a real serial port. USB to serial conversions can be a pain in the ass.

I can't as my laptop is serial port and never had to deal with the problem.
There have been several good post about how to make it work.
Search!

I have a Dell Insiprion 8100 from 2001 (windows XP SP1)

I have a serial port, but im going to try to find a serial cable and see how that goes.

I gotta find the software/drives for the serial port though.

and about the .dat file... i just want to monitor temperatures and settings and such... i dont want to mess up the tune

You shouldn't need drivers if you indeed have a real serial port (not USB). It'll probably work just fine if you plug a real serial cable in to COM1 and the other end into the datalogit.

1. Make certain that your usb-serial converter is being recognized by Windows. Right-click My Computer | Properties | Hardware | Device Manager. Check to see that your usb-serial converter is showing under Ports (COM & LPT) and that there isn't a yellow question mark but an icon that looks like a plug.

If you don't see it, then you'll need to re-install the drivers for your usb-serial converter.

2. You'll need to know which COM port your usb-serial converter is on. Just check the Device Manager and expand Ports. You should see your usb-serial converter somewhere in there (assuming you took care of No. 1).

Once you know which COM port your usb-serial converter is on, you can point it on the application.
