Please help, could be a PFS purple computer problem

I just bought a 93 rx and its got a down pipe, high flow cat - which have come apart and are now basically a mid-pipe, also the line from the air pump is not connected to the high flow cat. and pfs cat back, pfs purple computer, pfs medium ic, pfs cold air, and power pullys, well the thing is running rich to the point it makes me get headaches and shit. Also lots of pops, about everytime I left off the gas or back on the gas, or mostly at low rpms, sometimes at high rpms, Is this normal and I'm just going to have to live with it or is there something that can help get rid of the pops and fumes, I've had the o2 changed to a stock one and the plugs changed to 2-7's, and 2-9's, Is there something else that might be causing this. Could it be the ecu, when I unplug the pfs computer it rolls out puffs of black smoke, when I plug it back in with menu 100 idel set to -20, it seems to be better but still pops and has fumes all over the place. Does anyone have any sugestions.

did you check to see if your map sensor vacuum line came off?

need300z 09-29-01 10:35 PM

Nope hasn't come off. And the PFS is showing vac pressure on seting III first turbo shows around 5-6 but I think thats low in part of the manual bost gauge, I think i'm going to turn that up a little and see what happens there. but still that doesn't explain the frequent pops and me dying from the fumes.

you are running rich!
take fuel out of your PT settings in menu 2 and out of idle setting in menu 1.

Do you think you could give a number to contact you at so you could help me out with the settings or email me your settings so I have something to go by.

silver93 09-30-01 10:23 PM

yeah, i can go over it over the phone if you want - send me a PM for it.

also, i assumed you saw this - i posted this in a thread about a week ago.

this should give you a place to start - if you need more info, just PM me and you can call me or whatever -

Here are my gold box settings.
I am running PFS intercooler, DP, CB, cold air.
Main cat is stock.
Plugs are BUR9EQPs all the way around.
I usea profec B for boost control, so i don;t know anything about vent learn or boost control with the gold/purple box.

all timing settings are zero unless noted,
Max boost on menu 9 is set for 15 psi. and i keep the profec B at 14 psi. These numnbers are for the "high" setting on the PMC. I don;t have numbers for the low or medium cause i jsut keep it on high all the time, so i never bothered.

Also, my experienec has shown to make all adjustments to the box with the car OFF. Unlike what the manufacturer says about adjusting with the car running, i have found that really SCREWS things up and the car starts running like "shit". Also, i have founf that it takes a little time for the ECU to get "adjusted" to new settings. So go slow, make some adjustments, drive around like that for a while, make more adjustments, etc....

idle: -28%

PT settings (menu 2)

setting 2200 4000 6000 7800
low -22% -22% -20% -12%
med -22% -20% -20% -10%
high -18% -14% -12% -4%

max boost settings (menu 6)
all 1psi settings are zero

max boost +6 +10 +18 +20
timing -2 -2 -4 -4

WOT menu - i don;t mess with it.see wade lanham's site for why. It's not necessary. )i think, unless you are using vent learn, which i am not.

My O2 readings are right at .84 with an occasional .86.
I assume that my high end boost is a little rich, but I need to get on a dyno with a wideband for exact tuning.

thats it - i now drive happily (except for the DAMN 3K hesitation) with NO backfiring or popping (even at high speed shifts)

PFS purple question

You may have to live with some of the backfire noises, since your stock pre-cat and cat (which are removed from your car) usually also help to silence some of the exhaust noise. I had a dp and mid pipe on my 90 GTUs and could get some really loud backfires when backing off the throttle. I put the cat and pre-cat back on and the noise went away. My FD (with PFS PMC like yours) has a down-pipe, stock cat and cat back but still has some mild backfire noises. Unless your ignition timing*instantaneously* adjusts for the new throttle position, you will have backfires on almost any piston or rotary engine, its just a matter of degrees of loudness, depending on your mufflers (or lack of mufflers) and your air/fuel mixture and timing. You can probably fool with the PMC to get the mixture/timing a little better. Now as for the fumes you talk about....sounds like you have an exhaust leak somewhere. Get it checked before you carbon monoxide yourself to RX-7 Heaven. (pardon the infringment on the RX7Heaven website).
