your 3rd grade teacher would be appalled at your spelling abilities...

I believe the PFS Purple Box was around $500 new. And honestly, that's about $500 more than the thing is worth.

Herblenny 11-05-07 09:40 PM

LOL! $500?? I think it was 1100-1200 when it was new.

:) alright then. It was $1200 too much. If the purple box was $1200 new, how much was the Gold box? that thing must have cost a fortune....

I know, this was before the PFC was availible, but it's still a piece.

Herblenny 11-05-07 09:48 PM

It was the only thing available back in the days thats consider tuning.. I had one and talked to Peter. He was super nice to me:)

But sold it before I even had a chance to install it..

I went with M2 Stage 3 ECU.. And I think PFC just came out on the market and some (most) were scare to put it in their car... including me!

It wasn't until I met SPOautos that I felt comfortable about putting PFC. SPOautos was one of the first few in the states to have one.. Back in the days PFC was $1400-1600 NEW!!

Well, its not a super bad ECU.. except its piggy back, very little support, and in today's standard, its bit old and out dated.. its like comparing Mac OS9 vs OS X. Both I'm sure will do the job but one is just better:) Ok, that might not of been a good example.. LOL!

If I remembe, I think PF used it to make the highest HP during the 90s with this box... So, I'm sure it works!

bajaman 11-06-07 08:28 AM

The only people 'blowing engines' with the PFS box were those that didn't understand tuning it, from what I have read. Seem like a lot of folk at the time were looking for that "quick and easy" hp upgrade and went too much, too fast. Much like a Honda kid that puts on a big turbo and nitrous onto an otherwise stock engine and then wonders why he keeps melting holes in the pistons...lol!
Yes, it is 'old technology' but at one time it was the ONLY thing available. And PFS had made quite a name for themselves as everyone wanted to be associated with this new Japanese supercar, the 3rd gen RX-7.
One would be a bit of a fool to try and wring more than ~350 hp out of the PFS box I would venture, but shoot....people were willing to spend big bucks for another 25 - 50 hp. Still are, frankly.
And, you have to give kudos to PFS for making a box that worked equally well in both manual and automatic tranny cars....something few other aftermarket companies wanted to dick with.

i actually have this purple box in my car with datalogger. I can't find anyone to tune it properly for me but on "low" mode, the car seems to be running fine except that it's really rich.

Was this comment even necessary considering how people text message these days?

The low setting should essentially be 'stock' unless someone has dicked with things...

Mr rx-7 tt 11-06-07 07:58 PM

I would suggest you find out if the box was tuned or not for another car. It might be worth asking (sending it) to Peter Farrell Supercars...
