What engines can i put in a 91 RX7 other then a Rotary?
hey everyone, yes i am a newbie :bigthumb: umm i just got a 1991 rx7 off a buddy, but the rotary engine is done, so i wanted to put another type of engine in it, but i dont know what engines have mathing bolt patterns for the tranny? ive heard of guys putting small block chevys in their rx7's but to do that you gotta change the tranny aswell, so just wondering if you guys knew some other engines that i could use while keeping the factory tranny. please
and p.s. anyone know the transmission code? 1991 Mazda RX-7 non turbo thanks you |
check the other engine forum in rotary peformance
alot will fit pretty well, but teh stock tranny will have to go no matter what. 350 or 302 are always good choices |
Honda...

How much money do you have?
|
sr20's, LS1/LT1's, 5.0's, 351w's/c's anything you can stuff under the hood will be fine. :)

Pretty mucha any engine. The only other engines with the same bolt pattern are some other mazda 4 Cylinder engines. It would be a huge step backwards doing this though.
I'm personally planning a twin turbo DOHC 4.6L cobra motor for a third gen. Mike |
oh thanks, but the money isnt an issue, i just need to know my options of engine, but again i want to use the same transmission that came with the car, so the engine will need to have the same bolt pattern,
i know a guy that did a 302 swap but then i gotta change the tranny aswell, and i wanna keep the tranny stock, so any ideas? |
Basically any engine will work (as long as it's not too big) if you're willing to put in the money.

I'm not sure wich motors had the same bolt pattern. All I know is I saw an old 88-89 B2200 with a 13b in it and he was using the stock tranny. So I'm sure it would work the other way with the B2200 motor bolting to the RX-7 tranny. I believe the truck motor was the same block as the turbo 626 IIRC. I could be wrong but To the best of my knowledge this is accurate.

i say a 1.5 liter crx hf motor, mad power baby. seriously though i am going to buy a 1st gen and put a 302 mustang 5.0 in it. 285hp stock. that thing will fly after i modify it, just have to figure out where to get wings for it.
|
ya im thinking for my 89 gtu parts car im gonna put a lt1 or a ls1 in, i dont see any use in sending a nice body to the junkyard and i dont want to do a tII conversion. a ls1 might be a bit expensive but a lt1 can be found farily easily it would take some work but could be a hell of a car if i could do it right. i cant imagine what the car would be like with some torque but it would fly 350hp/300+ ft/lbs plus ~2800lbs equals fun.

id like to drop the Infinity Q45 V8 in to any sport coupe. 4.5 345hp high tech :)
picking up a 84 300zx for my winter car but down the line id like to make it a TT 450ZX :) 240z + TTVH45 720hp http://www.zparts.com/showcase/engin...z-testfit.html |
The engine you should look closer into can be found in Kia`s Sportage.
Its a 2,0L DOCH engine. I cant remember the output of Kia`s version. But its based on the engine in my 88 626 Coupe (aka Euro MX6) My engine are rated at 148hp at 6000 rpm and 18,6 kg/m at 4000 rpm and have the following specs bore and stroke 86mmx86mm Rodlength 150mm Compression ratio 10:1 Valve system 16V DOCH. Kia has made a few changes too their version Lower compression ratio = 9,2:1 Regular cast pistons instead of the Hyperautectic pistons in Mazdas own version Kia used the Crankshaft from Mazdas RF Diesel engine (this means you cant use the flywheel from a Mx6 or 626) I belive you can keep your tranny IF you use a bellhousing from a B2000 or B2200. Turboed with Forged pistons and proper tuning, only the sky is the limit (i have seen dynos showing 500+hp on these engines, and thats with stock crank and rods) Of course if you can find Mazdas own engine you migth have a better start powerwise, but Kia`s engine are already prepaired for an RWD Here is one of mine http://home.online.no/~arban/Pics/Sedan6.jpg Brand new shortblock (followed the above mentioned Coupe) http://home.online.no/~arban/Pics/Sh...k%20medium.jpg Some "go fast bits" (no in car pics yet) http://home.online.no/~arban/Pics/Co...20Turbokit.jpg |
Don't bother with primative and inferior engines.
What you need is one of these. 600+bhp 2600cc non-turbo and is more reliable than a V8. http://www.nzrotary.com/summerdrags/images/DSCN6583.jpg |

It does certainly appear to be a four rotor. The only problem with those things is the cost of the eccentric shaft.

It CAN be done with a V8. But honestly, V8 swaps are kind of tired these days. It was unique when my uncle was a kid, and they put a 350 in a Vega wagon. But those pushrod dinosaurs have been done to death.

All Aluminum 4.6L (the block wheighs 85 lbs) 650 RWHP 750 RWTQ 9000 RPM All this in a reliable daily driver. www.turbomustangs.com Mike The Crank in that engine can go way past 800hp and it’s mains, and block got the rigidity to run those levels but the rods, and pistons are NOT boost friendly. Powdered Rods and cast pistons are asking for problems before you even get past 550hp in boost. Add some good forged rods and pistons. The only Cobra motors that were built to handle that power were the 03’s and 04’s but they have a 160lb iron block. Not a good place to start with a RX/V8 hybrid. You can get VERY nice rebuilt short blocks with a forged bottom end, with better oil pump gears, and some very nice block work for about 3K. Then buy a used Mach 1 motor from KarKraft for 1800 bucks. Pull the heads/intake (the 03-04 Mach1/Cobra heads are the best so far for these cars and the Mach/Cobra cams are better than the 96-01 Cams also the Machs intake is better than the prior models, especially if you plan on going Turbo). Then sell the Mach short block for about 1K and you have 350hp NA motor to start off with that can run gobs of boost for about 4K. Whoever was bagging on Push rod V8’s knows nothing of LS1’s, LS6’s and LS2’s. Those motors hands down are some of the best motors in the world and this is coming from a Ford guy. Super compact, Extremely reliable, They make 350 to over 400hp N/A and still can obtain 25+ mpg in 400hp trim. Add Forged rods and pistons and you can run up to 600hp without even thinking about doing anything to the block. Over 600hp and you gotta look at sleeving the motor. |
yes :D
