VG30deTT swap

I have been thinking about swapping a vg30deTT into my 1990 GTU and I would like input from anyone who knows what they are talking about. I want to know the adverse affects to my weight distribution and handling, because I know a 3.0 v6 with an iron block is going to be heavy. Also, how hard is the swap/wiring? I know grannys has a relatively inexpensive kit. Share your knowledge with me!

wrong section. Go to "other engine swaps"

If your determined to do a piston swap then why put in an iron block v6 that has probably never been done and will require lots of custom fabrication when you can put in a aluminum v8 that has swap kits available making it very easy?

vg30 swaps have been done before, and I don't have the funding for an ls series motor right now.

Or...you could keep an OEM motor between the rails..

ncfc3s 03-11-08 07:52 PM

or you could sell your car and never look at another rx again.

Liquid Anarchy 03-11-08 09:29 PM

...HEY! Quit hating and get back to your wankel section!

...back on topic; grannys speed shop sells a mount kit that is designed for that application. Give them a look. As per weight; a VGTT I'm pretty sure might even outweigh an LT1; keep that in mind.

ncfc3s 03-12-08 11:21 AM

are those bullet holes in the windshield?

Liquid Anarchy 03-12-08 06:41 PM

...no; they're cat feet-prints. Off-topic bs post count +1 for both of us...

i vote LS1 swap

The VG has problems out of the ass. Needs built, before any real power can be made.

Good luck.

Completely false ! Im a nissan guy that usualy lurk these forums .It doesnt have problems out the ass nor does it need to be built to handle "real power". The only problem is that the engine bay of a z is very tight engine bay , and the engine is heavy. There are plenty of 500+ hp z's with stock blocks.check twinturbo.net,300zxforums.com,ttzd.com etc...

I have a VG30DE (no turbos) in my car. easy swap. all work done by me in a weekend. engine make 200 plus HP and has been trouble free. turbo setup could fit with some work. these engine are inexpensive and very durable. last season I raced my EP prepped 13b I rebuilt the engine every 5hours of race time. essentially every race I started with a new motor. It made somewhere near 200hp. I have more than 30 hours on my basicly stock vg30de. car setup and handling are unchanged from where I sit. I like the swap for my setup.

i was under the impression that turbos wouldn't fit in the engine bay if swapped... got pics of your setup though?

tims 03-24-08 05:31 PM

I posted some pics a while back on this forum in this section. best to search. The turbos would fit but new exhaust manifolds would need to be made and it might be easier to make it a single turbo. the RX7 has alot of room for turbo(s) on the passenger side but not much room on the driver's side. it could be done but not without some modifications. my car is not turbocharged it is normally aspirated.

could find on search. here is the top side and a photo of the driver's side motor mount.

I also have always loved the vg30dett. I thin the most expesnive part is fabricating a single turbo setup or fabricating the manifolds to make twin turbos work. It might be pretty heavy too. Anyone have the weight of this engine and tranny setup?

I dont mind the weight of the beefey 5 spd it has, but the engine sounds heavy.

Ive seen this swap done on 240sx without manfiold fabrication, just downpipes!

Although, I much prefer the Rotary in a Rx-7, the VG30DETT doesn't look too bad in a FC. I remember when I had my 91 300zx TT, and it was a BITCH too work on. I laughed at anyone who said Rotaries are hard to work with. The 300zx has some good top end, but man was it heavy. It should be good in a Rx-7 chassis but I think its gonna be really front heavy.

tims 03-26-08 07:30 PM

no official weight comparison, but I pulled the N/A13B and installed the VG30DE on the same day. On the hoist they didn't seem very different. The N/A trans is much lighter than the Nissan, but a turboII trans is about the same or even heavier. I think a fully dressed turboII engine and trans would be very close to the VG30DE. It has not changed the suspension setup on my race car. car still handles very neutral with no adjustments.

vg series kicks ass...it's one of the most reliable powerplants in the tuner world. yea it's heavy but that's a good thing....the weight comes from nissan making an almost bulletproof block(super thick) and crank so you can save money not having to go aftermarket later on. My friend has a vg30de that he tuboed and on stock rods and pistons he's laying down 362whp with no probs what so ever so go for it.....also why hasnt anybody considered going remote turbo using the stock manifolds with some custom piping? remote twins sound AWESOME!!! a guy in town made his own remote setup cheap as hell using a shurflo pump and two dsm turbos on his mustang. that way you woldnt need a custom manifold made.

im currently heavily considering this swap for a daily driver car i want to resurrect. Would like to see a few more pics of a VG30DE in the Fc. Maybe some more number based information

I prefer the rotary in the rx7 also. I just like the vg30dett engine.

I would consdier a vg30dett if i had a 240sx. I saw one swap that kept stock manifolds. I would think the weight dist might be better than a rb series engine. But Im not sure

rb26dett awd 240sx is another story

tims, cool stuff on the nonturbo VG setup, rock on.

200zx 04-23-08 04:17 PM

I have fitted the vg30dett in my s13 (240sx) and can tell you for the engine and box your looking at 320kg, yes I weighed it
