Supra 7 2JZ-GTE in a RX-7

I saw the article was first published in Turbo Magazine in Dec of 2001. That SP Engineering did a shop project of putting a 2JZ-GTE in an RX-7. That article really caught my eye.

"Using the engine's mounting points and the Mazdas's mounting points, Eric Toyoshiba from Advanced Design Fabrications (ADF) created a cradle that provided the engine with a comfortable place to nest while ensuring that the transmission and driveline could be properly joined. Making the motor sit in the Mazda body was one thing, wiring the engine up and making it run is another story. Knowing that the wiring set-ups from two car manufacturers are different, a new wiring system or scheme was developed. After a lengthy brainstorming session, SP Engineering decided to use the Painless Wiring 12 circuit race fuse box. Most of the Mazda wiring system was completely removed to install the Toyota wiring system in tandem with the Painless box"

"SP Engineering decided to use the Painless Wiring 12 circuit race fuse box. Most of the Mazda wiring system was completely removed to install the Toyota wiring system in tandem with the Painless box."

"The application of power is handled by a stock Supra six-speed transmission outfitted with a C's short shifter and HKS triple-place clutch. At the rear, thrust is funneled through a RE Amemiya differential and custom Titanium axles. SP Engineering elected to use a metal driveshaft in lieu of a lightweigh aluminum or carbon fiber unit for durability reasons."

I am not sure if you guys have read about it or not but I tired to search the forums about the idea of putting a 2JZ-GTE in a RX7 and I only found one long discussion but no one knew that it already had been done.

I was wondering what do you guys think about this? Do you guys think its a worth it now that we know it can be done? I am asking about this because I am going to start a RX-7 project but not sure what is going to go into it. :)

wow... tight fit.

akiratdk 11-22-04 10:44 AM

wow.... man...now he can push 700+ HP easily!~~~~ damn... I wanna do that too...

Justcarparts 11-22-04 10:49 AM

I have emailed SP Engineering about the project to find out a bit more and to see how much would it cost.

The problem with a 2jz is weight, length, and height. Sure you can get it to fit, but there's a lot of weight high in the engine bay, and forward of the front wheels. A LS1 is capable of making 700rwhp, is lighter, and fits better. :)

PhoenixDownVII 11-22-04 10:55 AM

Wow, isn't this Supra-7 like 2 years old? I remember seeing all of this years ago...holy repost.

Someone on this forum is doing a similiar conversion minus the problems of engine placement (no need for a bump in the hood) and wheelhop.

Forget the link..it's bookmarked at home...

With the weight/fabrication needed for this Turbo'd I-6, I'd much rather spend the money on a 20b or even a V-8 (LS1) if I need pistons.

Not worth it IMO, given the other 2 "fabrication" options many have with the FD. Unique? Sure it is, but so are midgets with long arms...

1point3liter 11-22-04 10:58 AM

I just posted the link. I find it hard to believe that he has no bumpsteer, but i imagine anything is possible.

totallimmortal 11-22-04 10:58 AM

Cool idea unike many i like seeing different engines tried out but with that motor i don't know why they sqeezed in both turbos i would have gone with one big one. and i agree with 1point3liter a ls1 would be easier and here in rednecktown i see 700hp v8s alot, but then again who doesn't love beating a v8 with a 1.3 liter lol

ghettostamps 11-22-04 11:06 AM

I don't really think it's a matter of "I wanted a boatload of horsepower", I think it's more of a "I want to combine 2 of Japans top tuner cars because it's never been done before." And I think that's cool as hell besides it being extremely nose heavy.

Waste of time...
Save the 2JZ-GTE swaps for the IS, GS, or SC (ala Soarer).

Unless you have $30,000 for this project, you're going to get stuck with a humungous garage sculpture.

How old are you?

Try $100k.

Bad2ndgen 11-22-04 02:56 PM

If someone is willing to fork out $100k for this project, I will do it right now! Just send me the money!

I think $30-$40k is resonable. I could get it done for that much.

Crash Test Joey 11-22-04 06:44 PM

Recently at Maryland International Raceway there was a Domestic vs. Import shootout. The imports had their ass handed to them, according to the folks who were there.

My FC has a Chevy V8 in it, and according to the rules, this wasn't allowed for any of the classes. However, one class did allow for swapped 6 cylinder engines - and this thread highlights one possible conversion that would be allowed in that class. So it would be allowed to compete, where my car would not. I think a lot of events would have similar rules.

Something to think about, anyway.

Think I could make some judges think an LS1 under the hood of an FD was actually a rotary or something??

That makes the conversion worth more than the car itself!

well so far i have only spent a little over $5k on this conversion...(keep in mind that i already had a lot of mods on the rx-7 prior to this swap like rear end, fuel pump, intercooler, and slim radiator fans. the engine fits just fine with plenty of room...i feel it fits even better than a 20b that i have seen in person. the a/c and p/s didn't have to be taken off despite what people on this forum. i laugh when i see what people say about this swap...they have NO IDEA what they are talking about and act like they know all the details about this swap. i didn't have to relocate the steering rack so that means no bumpsteer. Also, the stock hood shuts just fine with some trimming to the under part of the hood. the wiring is not hard at all...i have the stock guage cluster working along with all the rx-7 electrical extras. my swap will be done soon...i had a new idea about my radiator and am making some changes to it. i am to the point that the car is looking like a sleeper except for the sound and the huge intercooler :-p now that my BOV finally got shipped to me, it is time for the engine to see some boost! i'll keep you all posted...even though 90% of you think this is the worst sin know to man :-p

oh...since this board is so obsessed with weight, i will get the car to a scale as soon as i finish up the "stock 2jz" form of the swap.

RETed 11-23-04 01:16 AM

$5k include the price of the engine and transmission???

I'd really like to see this up and running some day.
A lot of projects of this nature don't get completed.

I'd love to see some under car pictures of the steering rack and custom engine cradle.

I was being realistic. Little shit adds up quick... maybe 50 would cover it?

I was also looking at the rest of the car, which seems to have a lot of body appointments, a fresh paintjob, a show-quality interior, and so forth.

even has plenty of room to work on it :)

For what I paid for my cars, I could use a lawn mower engine and the conversion would make the car worth more :D
