SR20DET'd RX7 headed for the track

Headed to the track Sunday where the Southeast Z shootout is being held in Reynolds, GA. Apparantly some V8 RX7's will also be attending.
Car has made over 400hp@wheels on pump gas thus far. New M/H ET Streets are on the car as well as the new turbo. The new Kaaz LSD should be in place by Thursday. You can snicker if you like, but we are shooting for 10's with the nitrous. For those who are not familiar I will post another pic.

Good luck! Looks really nice :)

The turbo is in an interesting location.

I used to own a 240sx and I'm somewhat knowledgeable of the SR engine.

How much space (or lack of space) is there that caused you to decide to relocate the turbo in front of the engine? Doesn't that cause you to make some very LONG piping to the intercooler? The engine looks like it sits quite a bit higher than the 13B. Do you have a custom hood? Are you concerned about chassis rigidity up front (because you had to cut the frame between the headlights)?

Please provide more closeup pics. I must say....I am really impressed.

It would have been a tight fit to put the turbo on the side of the motor, not to say it couldn't be done. We wanted to utilize a merge collector in the design as well as the inconel/321SS bellow to absorb thermal expansion. These constraints led us to place the turbo in front of the motor. The piping is not too bad, although with the 1.75" primaries there is a larger system volume which may add to spool issues. However, the turbo is fairly responsive with full boost in the 4500rpm range on a T-series equivalent turbo. Stock hood is used with no clearance issues. A part of the frame between the headlights was removed, but we are not worried about frame rigidity. The front cross piece removed does little, if any, to enhance frame rigidity. The engine cross member does alot to stiffen up the front chasis.

I'll be at that meet too in a white 406SBC GTU. I can't wait to see your car. :D

Good job, take some vids of it when you can. You and the others are testament to good ol' human creativity. ;)

WOW! 2 of the most beautiful cars in one! ;) such a beauty to see! time for someone to put a 13b in a 240! =X hahaha good luck at the tracks man!

rx7speed811 02-18-03 06:20 PM

WOW! very nice! if you dont mind asking, how much would a project like this cost to reproduce? 400+hp with decent reliability sounds very appealing...

vosko 02-18-03 06:22 PM

from what i have heard and seen there are alot more 400+hp FD's running around than SR powered 240SX's.....

93 R1 02-18-03 07:16 PM

good luck

I do agree with your point about keeping the rotory in the rx-7 but i would assume half the people doing SR swaps into 240sx are doing it because they what a quick car and dont have money for a 400hp rx-7 or supra, cars of that sort. Just a thought.

Well, I never mentioned reliability of having 400RWHP on a stock SR20DET longblock. I know this of Nissan turbo motors, forged crank and forged rods from the factory as well as decent pistons. The weak link will be the stock head gasket and pistons if tuning is not correct. I do not think 13B's can say 400hp@wheels is a common occurance although I could be wrong. This swap was not intended to say the rotary motor sucks, but to try something new and uncommon. I think, as with any motor, a certain amount of mods must be done to allow a motor to sustain the abuse of high hp. The motor in my 240Z is 3years old and I still beat on it with less than 2% leakdown in all cylinders.
Anyway, for a reliable 400hp@wheels in an SR20DET forged pistons, metal headgasket, ARP head studs and mild porting should be done. I will tell you what kills motors in most cases, faulty tuning or faulty parts.

who cares what other people think really!i don't see them w/ srx7's! that shiet's clean! just go have fun burning people! and i'd be pretty damn proud of my car if i did the swap myself!

I don't think anyone here in their right mind would argue that! :)

vosko 02-19-03 12:03 AM

faulty owners too!

in the tristate i know of more cars with 400+rwhp than without..... i guess the tristate just knows what they are doing :)

how many motors have you replaced vosko?

pasta peddler 04-30-03 11:03 PM

240ztt,
i am very interested in how you did the swap.i love 3g rx7's but i dont like the wanker.i want to put an sr20 in my car.is there a site that gives me info. on how to do this? what sort of engine managment and all that stuff are you running?how hard was the swap to perform? any info would be greatly appreciated.i want to know what i am going to be getting myself into.shoot me a pm.thanks...

pomanferrari 04-30-03 11:07 PM

I hate to admit it but that engine looked like it belong in there.

Much kudos for your efforts and ingenuity. Something different from the V-8 crowd. Now I'm just waiting for someone to stick the AUDI 4.2 with the twin turbos or even the W-12 from the Audi into the RX7.

I think the headlights shouldn't have been molded into the front bumper ....
