The S15 6spd tranny will not hold up to that kind of horsepower.

To make that 6spd trans ... they gutted the 5spd and put smaller (weaker) gears in to make the 6spd. It will not hold up to much more than stock power levels.

Just FYI

tnt 11-02-02 04:43 PM

i have heard that from some people overseas that they are having problems with the six speeds, however by the time that i get around to that maybe they will have a solution..... I just finished tacking the crossmember togetherand setting the motor in i will start making mounts tommorrow...

Thanx for the replies good bad or indifferent i like to here some peoples reactions...

An sr20 has more off boost torque than a 13b any day of the week....

sr20 power.

Good on you tnt for the innovation.

Pump gas too.

Interesting, to say the least...

Just so I understand this right - You're going from a 2.6l motor that can handle 700HP+ and 8500 rpm on stock internals to a 2.0l motor that's famous for breaking apart above 450rwhp?

Not only do I not understand your motivation in reduced capacity, let alone mechanical strength I also don't get why you chose an SR20 / S13box combination

Australia has had the SR20DET from the word go with the s13 silvias and the GTI-R's (I know it's a different motor) and it's been proven here time and time again that the SR20, despite being a great stock motor, has major reliability issues when making big power. ALL of the 4cyl drag cars here use the FJ20 bottom end for it's stength. The fastest 4cyl in OZ run's about 8.1 and had it's SR20 motor removed because it wasn't up to it.

So I guess all I want to know is why? Most people use non-rotary motors because they don't want the heartache of a motor that can't handle detonation well. Yet if you're going with a big boosting SR20 you're in the same boat but with less capacity.

Am I missing something really obvious?

Yes, he is going from a 1.3 liter to 2.0 liter motor.:D

I agree with that ... it has much more than a rotary. Why do you think the FD came with 4:11 gears out back?? To make up for the lack of torque.

I'm looking forward to the finished product TNT ... I had thought of this very same swap idea, but hadn't saved up enough to perform it. When i get around to it, you'll have to give me soem pointers. ;)

Good Luck

Where are you getting 2.6 liters from?!?

Also, if built right ... the sr20 will acheive reliable power above 450whp.

Hopefully they will find a fix for the weak 6spd ... until then, stick to that beefy 5spd. It should do the job well.

You might be ... I think most everyone has missed it. It sounds a lot like a show car to me.

And tnt, the "solution" to the frail 6-speed S15 tranny is presented to you by the fine folks at TRUST.

A 13b displaces 1.3 litres each rotation. So does an RB26. In two rotations both have displaced 2.6 litres.

As for >450rwhp SR20 being reliable - Who? Where? All the ones I've seen above that run race gas and are totally undriveable. Show me a daily driven 500HP sr20.

Look at the NA engines. The current SR20DE with all it's variable doodads puts out as much torque as a wheezy carbed 1974 rx-4. Ooooh impressive. The rx-8 engine that everyone has been bitching about for having low torque has 20% more than the SR20DE.

I don't think it's the Power of the Rotary that scares him...I think it's all the "character flaws" of the 3rd Gen. G'luck tnt

BTW

Its a 3.9L not a 1.3, not a 2.6, swept volume is 3.9L. By doing this swap the capacity is halved.

Such ignorance ....

tnt 11-02-02 07:22 PM

My car is a well rounded car but not a show car by any means it will be real world powersteering and AC included, Nothing scares me about the rotary. I just want to try something different and am not good with the internals of rotary not to mention it doesn't cost me 300 bux just because i pull it apart and have to buy new seals.... For all of you that completely disagee, thats cool, just because my FD doesn't have a rotary doesn't take anything away from rotary roots, i am not sure what 93TT meant by I have a problem w/ FD "character flaws", Also keep in mind i did not buy a FD and automatically do the swap I had MWW build me a streetprted built motor, i put a single turbo redid the fuel system went haltech, tuned it on ly dyno anf i just was not real happy with it, but for all of you die hards i have a great deal on 13brew with only 2500 miles on it...

tnt 11-02-02 07:26 PM

Oh yah, BTW i considered the rb26 or even the 25 but it is about equal of the SP 2JZ swap, which to me is not real world because you are talking a boat load of cash, I hope to show that it is fairly cost effective to do this swap for people that love the FD but not the rotary, not to mention it is a good calling card for my shop and the budget we are on, which is no where near that of an SP or shop like that... Just my thoughts and motivation..
