RX7 FC Engine Q's..
I'm probably both gonna get hung not for using the search button, AND for planning what I am planning to do...
I'd like to say first that I really love the look of the FC, but I really don't like rotary's, since everytime I have seen one, it has blown it's engine. What I'm planning is to put a Volvo B21ET turboengine in it, but I'd also like to see what other conversions has been made, and how it's been done. Does anyone out there have any good links? /Martin |
there have been many many other engines swapped into FCs, thanks to its generously HUGE engine bay and the subframe is deep down low and the trans tunnel is pretty large.
there is another forum here for such questiosn too, your thread will probably get moved there soon. in FCs I have seen the SR20DET, Ford 2.3 turbo, Honda F20c, Mustang V6, Nissan Maxima V6, GM v6 turboand many many V8 swaps... yours is the first volvo swap I can think of but anything is possible, I think the computer and electronics are usually the most time consuming to integrate if you want a clean swap and accurate gauges. good luck man. |

taking the rotary out of the 7 is a sin....the rotary gods will get their revenge

Do you have any information on this Volvo engine? I'm not familiar with any 4 cylinder Volvo powerplants that are particularly more powerful then the rotary you're replacing (which is not an altogether bad engine, despite my earlier quip). Is there a reason for that motor, or do you just have one in your parents garage? |
Just live in Norway, and had a Volvo rallycar.
I'm gonna build a B21ET powerplant, not more BHP than I'm getting now, but I don't think the motor in the car will last for to long, but that story remains untold... |

Is there any, any at all, engine conversion that can be only bolt in with the right parts?
|
there is no engine that just bolts in other than the S4 or S5 variants.
But there is bolt on engine mount kits that can make almost any motor swap right in. Some are complete packages ( include rad, driveshaft ,etc . ) but are not cheap. LS1, etc models. as stated above, 13b is good to handle the power levels if cared for . You might be better off , taking out the motor and doing a pre ventive rebuild and like that much less parts to buy , and then you will feal much better with your car. |
There was a ridiculously insane Manta with a twin-charged Volvo 2.0L powerplant in it that was making over 500 hp. Incredible car.
Actually, I found the link. http://www.hilmersson-racing.com/start.asp?show=ec I love this car. |
I just got the best idea ever: put that engine into an RX-7, add some nitrous, and go race for money. People would be like "what you got in there?" and you could just say "well, I've got forged pistons and rods, a turbo, supercharger, and nitrous." And no one would believe you! They would just think you were some dumbass who didn't even realize rotaries don't use pistons.
|
Hehe... I was asking mostly to know if something is easier than the other... I think'll stick to my plan and build the volvo engine, if nothing else than just as a livingroom gadget with 300+ bhp:P
|
Hehe, I like that idea. My coffee table has 300 hp!

I'm telling you, you'd clean up... At least the first couple times (make 'em BIG bets!).
That Manta is awesome though, I LOVE it! |
hey owen...if you proceed with the volvo tell me what happens...im thinking about doin the same thing....

I'm a 2.3 ford guy.
Do you plan on the 16v head? There is a kit for the 2.3 ford and I know they are almost identical engines, so you might want to check out about modding that kit. check my site for pictures of my car and the engine mounts and stuff |
