Putting a 13B into a 240z or 260z???
Hey all, I have been thinking about using a 240/260z with a BP 13B in it (Cuz these cars don't need to be smoged). If anyone has some link sor info please post.
Sorry for not searching but I am posting this as I leave for work. (And I hate pumping gas in teh rain like I am going to have to do today :( ) |
shouldn't be too hard at all. Z's have big engine bays and rotarys are small. Your not going to be able to find parts of the shelf to do this swap though .
|
And why bother? A 240/260Z motor w/ triple side draft webber dcoe's and a race header will pump out more HP and LOTS more low end torque than a bp13b.
(now a TURBO 13bt @14 psi is a whole diff story :D) Dropping a 13b in an early 510 make much better sense as the HP potential of the orig 2L i4 in the 510 is much less than the 240/260/280's 2.4<>2.8L i6. but the 510 is super light AND has a great 4wheel independant suspension just like a 240z. However the 260/280z's gained ALOT of weight to pass US safety regs after 74 |
A 20B or 26B could probably fit well in the engine bay. It's long enough. :)
|
Now your talking, a 26B w/450+ NA hp in a 2400lb 240z chassis
|
250hp? I haven't seen that many ppl get that kinda N/A power out of a L series motor dude. An dplus it would take a bunch of weight out of the car.
And the reason that I don't want to 510, they are uglyer than sin, and talk about a PITA to work on. |
At one time I had a choice to work on either a 510 or a rotary GLC. I chose the GLC. Glad I did. However, that 510 is getting a T2 13B soon. I'll keep track of how difficult it is to swap and then routine maintanence after.
|
Do it! A 13BT in a 240 would be sweet, it has alot more going for it than the "typical" 510 swap.
The engine will be far back in the chassis for great handling and have plenty of room for a nice horizontal mount IC under the hood to keep the weight centralized and short plumbing. You will lose sooo much weight over that cast iron straight 6! It should handle sweet. |
should drop a 20b, i would. Maybe a Grand National V6 Turbo motor, too bad i hate automatics.

I love rotaries and I love those L series engines. Both have their pro's and con's. But a N/A L28 can make 250hp easily if built up right. If you can find any Car Boy (from Japan of course) magazines then you'll probably find plenty of examples of L engines making well in excess of 300hp. 250hp would be very streetable with a decently built/tuned L. This magazine is mainly geared towards the drag racing demographic over there but there is still a lot of coverage for this engine over there.
In the right hands, they can be make to be very nice. But if you look at the engine as nothing more than a heavy lump of iron (they are heavy engines) then you'll be selling it short. Those things were overbuilt from the start. Get a good rebuild and a nice triple carb setup of your choice and it'd be a sweet ride. The L has it's own character that I'm sure you'd love. There's a reason why so many people fell in love with them when they were newer and more plentiful. |
screw it, stick an RB26DETT in it....
|
I don't know, I know more about rotary than a piston engine...
I think it's a great idea, 240zx = beautiful car... |
Of the 4 zcars I have owned my current 73 240Z is the best, the L series motors are overbuilt and can run well over 100K with little maint. There are so many upgrades with L series motors 250HP from stock motor is possible, there are stroker kits to 3.1L.Turbo L28 can make 350hp+ reliably why go 13B?
|
yeah i would put an Rb in and not a rotary i love rotarys but an RB25DET would fit and make 250Hp stock with no mods and im thinking that trans would be easy to mount up to it. But i dk i have never worked on one of those old Z's

Anyway just my opinion...I would even consider a bone stock LS6 out of a ZO6 and leave it alone. Just do brakes, suspension and tying up the chassis. BLAH BLAH one day...let me finish the TII first |
how about a rb26dett in a fd yea baby.
|
it wil cramp the whole FD engine bay ...:)
|
But it would be invinsible, thats one engine swap I would do for sure.
|
I have always liked the looks of the 510. I had one while I was in school. Great car! Great handling. I was thinking of making one my next project care. This gives me some ideas.

You shoud check out www.hybridz.org
It's all about custom engines in classic Z cars. Everything from V8's to Supra motors and a section of nothing but crazy custom swaps. Lot's of great info on this site. A must for any one thinking of playing with a Z car. |
