ka24det in FD

a buddy of mine totaled his 97 240 and he built up the engine, turbo, the whole 9. well hes shipping out in a couple weeks and moving to Oregon. long story short i can get this engine dirt cheap and put it into my FD that has a blown oil control ring seal (so i was told by ricks rotary) i dont want to rebuild it seeing how this is my 2nd engine and im a college kid so not a lot of money. i know ill probably get flamed but would this be a good choice for a CA legal swap if i just take off the turbo and have them BAR it?

i know i need all emission equipment working and a properly working chek engine light. and if its OBD2 i cant modify the exhaust until after the post o2 sensor. also does a ka24s driveline spin in the same direction as the 13b thats in my fd now?because if it doesnt i cant use me diff right?

First of all, you'd spend more money on all the fabrication and custom work in order to make it work than you would in gas money for a rotary in a life time.

Maybe not, but you'd be spending a loooooot of money. You'd be better off just rebuilding the engine.

The biggest reason why you don't wanna do this is because you already said you don't have a lot of money. It's more expensive than just buying an engine, you have to consider how you're going to mount it and all nec. mods to make it fit in the 7. This includes not only the emissions but all the electrical systems mating and working as well. The CA BAR program is very exclusive and chances are, they won't grant you the right to drive it publicly. If you are really down for this, then by all means, but good luck.

P.S. where's "organ"??

ya but i keep running into problems with my 7 i swear this thing loves to snack on 500 dollar bills (if they made em) i think a swap is the answer to the reliability issues i have with mine. and no1 works on them down here.

I'm not the only one considering a kadet7.

I'm trying to scoop up a running s13 hatch for $800 so i have everything needed.

The mounts can be done pretty cheap if you have a welder.

Just make cardboard mock ups with the engine and trans jacked in place where you want it, transfer over to steel and you're golden.

IIRC, the stock throttle cable will work and i dont remember if the stock 240 speedo cable or the stock fc speedo cable is what will work.

Dont let people scare you out of the swap. Break it down in steps and it gets easy UNTIL you get to wiring the car.

You'll need both the 240sx fsm and the fc fsm to get all the pinouts and harness crap right. Also, making a checklist on a board/paper will help a shitload too.

Good luck.

KA's are stupid reliable. Especially if you have a good tune when adding forced induction into the mix.

Edit. For the driveshaft, bring your fd and 240 driveshaft to the shop. Give them the measurments from diff to tranny on your car and they can sex them together for you on the cheap.

ok thanks. ive heard that there really reliable the only downfall is the pistons which if i bought the car his were replaced with better ones. its just having it pass the bar is what im worried about.

NoPistons! 01-09-10 05:11 AM

Yes. The stock pistons are weak.

Only good for about 300hp.

I'm not sure about the rods but they can handle a bit more than that.

I found a good deal locally on some ross pistons for $250 and the same guy is trying to find me an engine so hopefully i can jump on that.

This swap should be known as the 24/7. 2.4L rx7. Cool stuff and good luck to you. Just whatever you do, dont get discouraged and if you aren't sure about something, ask

One thing i did forget is your oil pan and pick up tube.

You will have to make them rear sump.

Cardboard mockup for the pan. Maybe use some flex hose (like a bendy straw but bigger. It needs to hold it's shape) for the pick up tube.

Maybe some 3/16" aluminum plate. IIRC the pick up tube is mild steel.

Getting my wrecked 240 parts car this weekend hopefully.

See if you can keep up!
