Interesting swap - turbo Buick V6
This is the first buick powered fd I have seen. Turbo 3.8L V6 out of the Grand National??? I am not too familiar with buicks, so someone correct me if I am wrong.

That's Misred's car. He had a GN powered FC before that he sold.
http://www.misred.com/ The Buick swap seems like it would be pretty cool, but there's two things that would stop me from considering it. The first is the absolute requirement to run an auto transmission. I want my manual, no autos for me thank you. The second being that it's technically illegal, since the engine going into the car is older than the chassis. I'd guess that 99.99% of the time the monkey inspecting your car to register it wouldn't even notice, but with my luck I'd get the 0.01% stickler that would fail the car. :( |
Old news, his car has been around for quite some time now....head over to torquecentral.com to get more info.
I actually talked to him about his turbo GN FC, He's a super cool guy and was really helpful. also, since the Turbo 3.8L V6 makes ssoooo much low end torque and horsepower, the first 3 gears of a manuel tranny would be useless. The engine is excellent, I've seen them dyno at 500+hp w/ all bolt ons. oh btw, this is prob in the wrong section |

I'm guessing they will be pretty useless on a turbocharged LS1 as well. I'll find out soon enough. |

And I'm not super concerned about being legal, as I don't have any emmissions equipment on the car. :) |
Swapping in a light all aluminum V8 is one thing. Swapping in an all-iron pig of an engine with the additional heavy forced induction hardware is another. And auto only? No thanks.

Sorry, did a search for "buick swap" and nothing came up :o: |
as previous owner of a 87 Grand National
the 3.8 ltr sequential fuelinjected turbo motor is the only thing worth having off that GrandNational Chassis. |
No Ic Yikes
|
The 87's did have an ic.

The Cyclone and Typhoon Engine was a 4.3 liter turbo, not a 3.8 like the GN's ran.
|
Rynberg.... believe it or not.. the GN engine with turbo/intercooler etc is lighter than the LS1. Probably helps it is only about 14 inches long and has 2 less cylinders.
GN with everything: 420lbs LS1 with everything: 481lbs http://www.turbobuicks.com/forums/sh...&highlight=LS1 Mike is running the hose from the turbo to the TB because he hasn't completed the intercooler piping yet. When his car is done..... it should be pretty bad ass. I went LS1 also simply because I missed a manual trans... and the T56 gets great economy, can be beat on.... and allows for an insane top end speed. I don't think a GN engine would last long in 20 minute HPDE trashings at the road race course either. -Mark |
If anyone remembers Indy Lights, they used that Buick v6 in all the cars.
|
are you some of saying that there is something wrong with the grand national besides it being a automatic
|
I remember Menards running a Buick turbo V6 in the 500 in the early '90s.

I opened that pic and said to myself, "WTF, is that a dryer vent hose? Looks like something off the back of a Kenmore." |
jose zeda, here in louisiana, has had a turbo buick fd he calls a gnx7 for years. it was featured in turbo and high tech performance back in the 90s. go to www.joserotary.com, it's the two tone fd in the pic of the front of his shop.
|
jose is my uncle, the gnx7 deffinatly has some awesome power to it. swaping with the gn made this car a mean machine
|
GN motors are insane, seen quite a few <10sec GN's up here in New England. What did the GN weight?
|
damn those GN motors... nice!
8 second GNs roam around pamona raceway. |
