enlighten me (ka swap)

so just out of curiousity

is it possible to drop a ka24 swap into 79-85 rx7?
how hard would it be to pull off?
has anyone succesfully done it?

give me your thoughts and answers!
thanks

Time, Money, Skills.

Have all traits, or don't attempt. I have seen a RB20DET motor in a first gen before.

A Ka is a rare engine to be swapping TO. Most people consider them worthless. Even the DOHCs are fairly low output.

justint5387 08-12-08 02:57 AM

Why the KA? I driven friends' 240 with the KA, they are all slow...

Honestly that's relative to the power: weight of the vehicle you're sticking the engine in.

stock, the KA doesn't have a lot more horsepower than a 12a, and even less of margin between it and the 13b. But i would say it's easier to obtain aftermarket for a KA and could easily build a high horsepower one.

Andy, and friend from high shool, is currently building a KA24 with a top mount T0304, to go in an '85 200sx, and looking at 300+. Obviously this is attainable with a rotary too, and would definitely be easier to do in a 13b.

Is this curiosity spawned out of want for originality? or just pure curiosity. haha.

someone here has done a ka-t swap.
i dont remember his user name though.

it is sparked by curiousity as i have "cheap access" to an 85 shell and a ka24de motor and swap...thanks for all the input folks! keep em comin

There's a SR20 FB for sale right now, so yes, a KA is possible.

BS.

I didnt have the money or skills when i first started my project, but i did have the time. And i like to think i turned out a nice machine.

Most rx7 engine swaps now are bolt in(providing you buy the engine kit from a manufacturer).

Piston vs rotor is selling his SR20 swapped FB right now for pretty cheap. You might want to PM him.

Get the KA and swap out the truck cams and add a turbo kit, and it will be a real nice combo in an FB.

Ka is a good engine. It is common to find the twincams for 100-300 dollars with about 70,000 miles cause everyone wants sr20's. After market parts are cheap also. You can find cast iron turbo manifold for twincams, on craigslist, for about 75 bucks.

They are all close deck iron blocks.

240sx.net also claims some dude made 400-500 whp on stock bottom end. WHo knows how long it lasted. But thats what they say.

if your going to attempt to drop a KA in there might as well drop a SR instead they both have the same mounts. Don't even waste your money turboing the KA your just going to blow it up in less then a month. It'll end up costing more then going with the SR at the end.

does the CA18DET use the same engine mounts as anSR and a KA? i wopuld love to find a CA20E and do a DET head swap on it.

who and where lol?

dbragg 09-14-08 06:33 AM

its possible and not too complicated. a KA in a FB would make a great dd. you would get awsome gas mileage. if you want power, go for a SR. i have researched both and have nothing against KA T, they just arent as reliable and dont the market backing like the SR.

i contimplated this swap at one time. i dont like how the exhaustis on the drivers side with a SR or KA. i think 4G63 is a better canidate.

hmm, nice. how much clearance do you have with the lowest section on your exhaust? where did you cross it over? can you get any under the car pics? maybe on a lift.

that seems to have about as much clearance as my full Rotary Engineering exhaust. i dont know why, but they designed it low, very low.

driftking777 09-22-08 03:19 PM

well my car is dropped about 2-3 inches right now and frankly i wasnt paying attention when welding my last flange on, so as you can tell the flange is pointing down instead of being flat. that being said though, probably 3inches or so. after i turn it will make about a 1/2 inch difference. So all in all will it scrap right there...yea probably, but thats something im ok with, its just an exhuast.

driftking777 09-22-08 03:23 PM

oh..btw..it crosses right underneath the transmission. when my garage gets finished i will post pictures of underneath for you.

rotor v. piston

its not just possible. it'd probably be super easy since sr20det and ka24de have practically the same mounting points and everything, since they are both direct factory installs into the 240sx. what that means is you could probably just copy rotor v. piston's setup and you'd have the ka in there with little (or maybe no) additional modifications.
