engine swap advice - 4 cyl. in a 3rd gen rx7
hey guys,
the last time i posted a thread on here i was asking if you could get a rolling shell of a 3rd gen rx7 and put a 12A (cant drive a 13b) in it. (this is due to the new driving laws with vehicle power restrictions) BUT, i have a new idea on something i could try. well, ive heard alot about putting a v8 in a 3rd gen.... but under the new laws i am not alowed to drive a v8.... so i was thinking..... would it be possible to buy a rolling shell 3rd gen and put a 4 cyl. engine in it instead?? if so, could i please have some information on how this could be done.... any advice will do.. that would be much appreciated. thank you |
not tryin sound negative, but there is a reason why there is "R" in RX7. and even if you could fit a twin overhead cam inline 4, good lucky finding one that matches the potential of a FD. (if you put anything with "honda" in a 3rd gen i'm sorry, but please don't buy an FD)

Ohhh.... you must so hate me! Depending on who you ask... the 'R' might stand for 'repair'. But wait, did i read the orignal post correctly? You wanted to put a 12a in a 3rd gen? wow, those must be some laws. How do they enforce that? I think you need to move... |
yeh they do suck....lol
yeah man.....the strongest rotary i can drive on my P's is a 12A...... anything higher than 1146cc im not allowed to drive.... i guess they just see if your car looks like its got some power in it n they pull u ova n chek your engine..... but yeah it does suck.....
well ive heard alot about v8 and v6 conversions in a 3rd gen.... so its either get a 1st gen with a 12A and spend alot of time and money fix'n it.... or get a rolling shell of a 3rd gen and put a piston engine in it (because with piston engines i can drive what i want unless its a v8 or has a turbo..... so at the moment im thinking of getting the 3rd gen and putting a v6 in it.....unless i cant find out how to put a 4 cyl. into it n save money on fuel..... but any advice about how to do this would be great.... |
As much as i dont like the piston conversion,Your doing it so you can still drive an rx7. Id sugest the k20(honda) or the twin cam 240 motor. My mom had an altima with the same motor. it was really quick.

Wtf
I see your in austrailia, what kinda crazy law prevents you from driving a V8 or a 13b?????
Till then my advice is ... get a rolling FD chassis build it right with a tweeked 13b or a LS motor AND drive the cheapest thing you can keep on the road and gather up more practical every day driving experience in the interim. it will make you a better driver in the long run |
Weird.... I've heard rumors of this law for those down-under. From what I understand, with that new law anyone under 25 cannot legally drive a high-performance vehicle. A high-performance vehicle being defined as:
Vehicle with 8 or more cylinders Turbocharged vehicle (except diesel) Supercharged vehicle (except diesel) Vehicle with engine output more that 200kW Rotary engine of more than 1146cc Any vehicle with engine modifications that needed an approval Absolutely crazy. -Rob |
So a cop will be able to tell the difference between a 12a and a 13b... right. They should first be able to tell the difference between a rotary and a piston engine. Or a cat and a pre-scilencer...
Better get a tow vehical and just build a track car. |
Find a four cylinder transmission combo available local to you. Replace the rotary with "new" engine. Drive it and have fun! When you get older put the rotary back in. Drive it and have even more fun!
If you do not cut up the engine bay for the swap, it will be easy to put back. A custom driveshaft to mate the tranny to rear end is not too expensive and you won't need to cut up your stock shaft. A tranny/engine adapter is another idea and use your stock transmission. I would guess that there is a Mazda four cylinder out there somewhere that uses a similar bolt pattern. |

What happens to all the <25 year olds that already have "high-performance" vehicles? What about motorcycles? What a bunch of horse-shit, I would be rioting. |
better idea. get everything together to build a badass car and when you start getting closer to the age, build it. that way when you can drive it youll have a badass car.
|
so, should putting a 4 cyl. engine and transmission (manual) from a mazda be a straight swap? or will i have to modify the engine bay to hold it in there?
if so, what would have to be done? |
sr20deT MOTOR FROM A NISSAN WOULD BE A GOOD LIGHT 4 CYL MOTOR. BUT YOU SAID NO TURBO SOOOOO.....
GUESS YOU WOULD JUST GET A SR20 THEN |

whoever wrote those laws should get shot!!....nonetheless the S2000 engine should be a good one , and since its already in the right orientation , (RWD) it should be easier to put in i guess
|
wow man fuck put a v8 in it and just build it to crazy numbers and just run away if they try to pull you over lol hahahaha
|
Seems that some of the Higher output naturally aspirated v6's should be considered. Snag a motor out of a something like a 350Z, BMW M3, etc.. a chevy 4.3 can put out impressive naturally aspirated HP for pennys on the dollar. Does your law have anything in it about nitrous?
|
yeh we cant have that eitha......sux ey... would a 6 be easier to put in than a 4? ive heard a little about 6's being swapped b4, but not 4's so i wouldnt relli no myself....
|
Mother of god man; please stop typing phonetically. You are from Australia. We get it.
Good luck with your swap. |
Don't even fuck with an RX-7 then until you're old enough.
(I couldnt really understand what jive he was spitting, so I just took it how I seen it). |
hey guys.... sorry about my shortened writing... bad habbit...
this is how it should read... "we cannot have nitrous, it sucks hey... would it be easier to put a v6 into the engine bay than a 4 cyl.? i have heard a little bit about v6's being swapped before, but not on 4 cyl.'s... im guessing it would be... but i wouldnt really know myself..." and i know alot of people do not like the piston swap and say that its not an rx ANYTHING unless it has a rotary engine..... i agree with that statement.... but one, i cant drive a 13b, and two, a car is a car, whether it be for everyday driving or for on the track... this forum is also for "other engine conversions" .... that includes the piston swap.... so i dont believe it is necessary to slap the "its not an rx7" kind of statement at anyone in this forum. |
how old are you??
seeing to it the way you ask these questions i wouldnt consider YOU doing anything to a 3rd gen whatsoever, so why cant you get a 240sx with a single cam...for the time being?? |
Why dont you just go with him buy a s13 or a s14 with a dohc ka24, and go from there its a good strong motor, i have owned a s13 there not all that bad but dont by a auto thinking you can do a stick swap that sucked and the auto trannys suck trust me been there done that.

If you want a fun car just buy a Nissan 240sx Coupe 1991-1994 recamended... These are very fun cars and some what decent power in them... they also have some decent torque... From what I see you are asking , Im going to say that you shouldnt even think about buy a FD3S yet... change an engine to a different engine other than stock is a lot hard than you think.. if you dont have any experiances with it..
It's not like the movies where you see people pop the hood wrench on a few bolts and have the engine out every body smile and bs like that... then when you get old enough you can just drop a SR20 black top in it or a red top... which would still be much cheaper than buy a FD and fuckin the shit out of the body to reduce power... |
wait why even get an FD and deal with all that BS????//
