Aready jumped... 2JZ

I know alot of you are fearfull of this project and for me as well. But I have sat on this car too long. Built the car from salvage and the original motor ran so the wife (now ex-wife) cut my funding short. Then the motor blew and I went too long without a motor; finally bought a 13b REW wanting the higher torque and dreaming a little. well that went south when the motor had a failed primary turbo and I coudn't get my money back. Now I have decided to go for the conversion and will be fabricating everything myself. I do not have alot of money to invest, I will only have a few reliable people to help (Greg of Autosports in Panama City) and as the title says...I already jumped so the money is spent and the motor is bought. I will post in a few weeks with pics of the car as is and try to keep a photo record for myself and to share.

most of you probably have atleast heard of the Supra 7 Turbo magazine article from SP Engineering. Well the car makes a ton of rwhp...think the vid claimed 866 and they drove it 2100 miles across the country. But this conversion removed the abs and A/C, they set the engine infront of the firewall and had little concern for weight and balance. Straight line car, cool but not the conversion I'm looking for. I have not found much of anything that would stand out as my idea of a good conversion (please post if you know of one). So I will do it completely from sctrach the way I think it should be and keep posting.

I heard the Supra7 suffered from horrible bump steer as they hadn't figured that out quite yet.

This should give you some hope:

If you plan to run a Supra Getrag 6speed.... prepare to spend some coin!

sounds like a badass swap. bullet proof car deserves a bullet proof engine haha.

bankmax 04-23-07 10:58 PM

Appreciate the support. still waiting on my motor but research suggests approx 30 inches water pump to back of the head, that makes it about 10 inches longer than the 13b. I can mod the car for this but my primary aim will be to get the CG correct, with all this being new territory I am using a used run of the mill engine and my existing car that has sat for close to 3 years. I think our friend with the wide body 2jz conversion tried to jump alot bigger at once and got everwhelmed. I hope to make this conversion proper and use what I learn to be able to reproduce it again with prefabbed parts and shop built motor...time is always the keeper of knowledge.

bankmax 04-23-07 11:12 PM

thanks, but the "geration gap" is as much a problem, the gen two has alot more room to work with though I think it's a sweet swap :)

The trick will be if someone can keep the stock hood.

I plan to cut and fabricate on the extreme side. My list at this time:
1. With everything hooked up being functional and daily driver.
2. Making the wieght and balance as close to original as possible.
3. Everything fitting inside the factory skin.
4. The ability to reproduce the outcome.

With that said, I'm no fool...I'm not the leading builder and I know others with stronger backgrounds have failed. So I will do my best and see it through.

side note: engine has made it from Ontario to Atlanta in 3 days, will have it friday at the latest :fingersx:

Well I have the motor. Did weight and balance on the 2JZ and 13b REW

2JZ twin turbo w/auto trans fully dressed
780 lbs. center of gravity 20.50 inches back from the front of pulleys

13b REW twin turbo w/auto trans fully dressed
610 lbs. center of gravity 17.25 inches back from the front of pulleys

base set up is approx. 2946 with a full tank of fuel and the engine/trans making 20.7% total car weight.
this means the engine/trans center of gravity falls 1.75 inches forward of the firewall.

with the added 170 lbs this should bring total weight to approx. 3116 with the engine making 25% of the total wieght

moving the engine/trans back 6 inches to maintain the center of gravity puts the rear of the engine head 4.50 inches behind the existing firewall.

This new engine location will put the front of the 2JZ pulleys even with the cross bar supporting the rack and pinion, and the new firewall location 5 inches back from original location.

wish me luck...

Wow...sounds like you know what your doing, good deal, good luck with it. Glad my swap wasnt that difficult!

bankmax 05-01-07 10:31 PM

if you didn't get the hint on the earlier posts...I am working on a budget, so I guess I will be buying my plasma cutter from the MAC truck so I can afford one and not pay interest. Hope to start cutting Sunday, the 6th

fd3s_jerry 05-03-07 05:14 PM

good luck man, I was kinda interested in doing an rb26dett swap in my fd, but I'm not ready to leap yet. keep us posted! :icon_tup:

Anything new? I would do the swap in a heartbeat if the hoof can be maintained.

Sorry for the delay in posting. My wife kinda got on me to finish up the house...refinance being our financial freedom and all. I got my plasma cutter today but have not prepped the car yet. As soon as I get a bit more on the house (to the point it will clear the assessment for refinance) I will be back on the car. Hopefully in the next week and I will have pics of layout, cutting and aftermath...see ya soon ;)

rarson 05-20-07 09:48 AM

Good luck with it, I hope you meet your goals.

tecknix 05-21-07 01:22 AM

Definitely good luck - I've love the FD and 2j for a long time - Finding a good way to put them both to work together would be awesome.

Daily driver of course! ;)

Keep us posted on your progress and firewall surgery.

Now if someone made an Aluminum block would it work out better?

7passu 05-22-07 05:26 PM

so how is it coming......did you get it done or any pic's

bankmax 05-24-07 08:35 PM

I'm slackin, have done next to nothing. I am still working on the house but will hopefully get some time in this weekend. I ended up with a delay on my plasma cutter. I bought one from Parker metals and just got it in last week. I spent a few days torturing some neighborhood kids bike playing with it and it is cool as hell. Anyways, I will do some this weekend and have pics up of what I do.

There is a dude over in Ft. Walton Beach that does 2jz swaps into everything maybe he could give you some tips?

I used to live down there in destin, nice place. I was a bouncer at a couple bars there plenty of nice lookin ladies.

bankmax 06-21-07 08:24 PM

Sorry I got sidetracked. Just got my wiring harness from NZ today. I have been way of coarse trying to get my shop up to speed-so I could store/lock up tools-so I could get more room in my house-so I can finish the drywall-so I can refinance-so I will have the freedom to work on my car...

Also, I took in some side work from my regular job to help pay for all the new toys in the shop.

kaisar1 07-19-07 06:11 AM

Already done with this project, there is only 1 n a half inch difference between firwall and the head. No major modifictaions were needed since it placed on original frame 13B had.

Just altered the frame for the foundations of 2JZ, thats it. And some modifications for GETRAG on the shell. Its a 2JZ-GTE and here in Pakistan cars are right hand drive so just the master brake cylinder is nudging the turbo body at rear of the engine, thats it. we'll sort it out soon.

And voila!!! the hood sits on its original position.

will post pics soon, since wiring is taking lot of time.
