Anyone drop a 300Zx engine into a RX?
 

I've got a VG30E from aan 88 300ZX na I can overbuild and a in line 6 from a 1979 280 zx with a tranny . Has anybody tried dropping eith of these into a 2nd gen GSL? I want a strip car to take some pink slips.

Any ideas? My RX is burning oil (seal going) and an apex isn't far behind. I just happen to have these other engines. Thought maybe I could make a speed demon.

I have a VG30DE in my second gen. I just got back from the first test day at the track. the car is great and the engine ran perfectly. I do need to work on the shifter and transmission. engine fits great and is an easy install. the single cam would be even easier. good luck.

I have not installed one of these in a RX-7 but do have experience with many Nissan VG series engines. I have rebuilt 3 and repaired many more. I like the construction of them...especially the strong bottom end. The oil squirters are a nice touch too. You shouldnt have too much trouble mounting it in your 2nd gen,especially now that Grannys offers a bolt in kit. I've built a VG30 and watched it make 500+ horsepower on the stock bottom end with no reliability issues after a full season of racing,that says a lot about the engineering of this engine. Since you have a VG30 thats a good portion of the swap cost I would go ahead and install it. You will need a factory wiring diagram for both the RX-7 and Nissan for the fuel injection. The actual swap isnt as difficult as most people think its the little things that get frustrating and expensive.

Do you have any experience with the transmissions? I need to work on the shift linkage. it has a really long throw and is a bit sloppy. I probably need to tear it apart and look at the shift forks and synchros. any ideas would be helpful

I'm sorry I do not. My experience with rebuilding mazda manual gearboxes is that if you can just get another used low mileage one your better off. The problem is it takes so many special tools to disassemle to get to the synchros. Thats with RX-7 trannys anyways. The other problem is its becoming very tough to get synchros for older cars. Dealers computers dont even list car parts older than 1995 typically. Your stuck searching online or going thru places like Mazdatrix..which charge a fortune for anything! Again this is for Mazda trannys. You should be able to find a Nissan VG30 style tranny to solve your problem. Make sure to cross reference it to see all the cars nissan used the same tranny in. If you have spanner wrenches,miniature pickle forks,slide hammers and ability to machine some of your own tools you may be able to get yours torn down. Thats what a mazda tranny uses anyways...sorry I couldnt be of more help.

The trans I have is a used one and it just has a very long throw and alot of slop. I have had some of the later Mazda geaboxes apart and they weren't to tough. I may just buy another JDM Nissan 'box and see what it takes. I am going to try one of those cheap short shifters as well. the one I had for the mazda box worked pretty well. thanks for the tips.
