"The" 2jz FD rx7 swap build. yay...

wasup guys, Names Joey. college student in NC. part time worker, (keeping all the queen city's cars clean.) well any who, so yea i sold my RB25 top mount s14 witch i miss dearly!!!! and put the money in the bank. Looking around for random shit, i happen to come across this 100% clean rust free 93 rx7. cool right? so i picked up it.

now i WISH i had a pick of this car when i bought it. lets just say, when i washed it, it was the first time in 5 years LOL.

cleaned it up and BAM. this came out

http://i47.tinypic.com/j0gnlc.jpg

excuse the poor quality, at the time all i had was my shitty phone. new pics will be up later....

so i was uber exicted to do the "typical" ls1 swap since the car was a roller. :hint: sitting for 5 years.

well looking looking looking....... NO DEALS. fuck it. ... look everyday, no deals. no deals. no freaking deals. nothing even close to a deal

well somehow i randomly came across this 2jz, and yea i bought it. NOT knowing how in the world i was going to put it in. or ANYTHING. i bought it, i didn't give a shit lol. it was a 2jz...no shit.

well here are some pics of the motor out of the car i bought it from. NOT MY CAR IN THE PICS.

a good compression, kept, clean 2jz with r154 tranny +1jz bell housing. SCORE!!!!!!! fuuuuuuckkkkaaaaa lllllllsssss1111 !

so yea... meet a guy. seems 100% legit. super nice guy. knows his shit. ( cool rap bro )

well he worked some magic and after some work ( few days ) we got this...

What was the guys name who you bought the 2j from? I think I might know him.. did he have an RB25 240?

mopar97 06-21-10 08:33 AM

^^ nope, this guy had a cressida and lived in South Carolina. I'm going to the shop today to look at it and take more pics hopefully! im just so excited get it running..

If anyone is reading this, please give me your honest answer. I posted this up on another forum and one guy literally said, " cool, but ls1 would have been better."

I told him this swap would be better than an ls1 by FAR. i mean granted the ls1 is probably lighter, but is no where near as strong as a 2jz..will never make the power that a 2jz can make, and ls1 is so freaking typical these days.

i figured the car's "value" would be considerably higher with a 2jz than if it "would be" with a stock ls1.

what do you think guys???

100% cooler. and i think definitely worth more in the end. and im not just saying that because im doin the same swap. if u want to check it out its probably a couple below urs, its the 93 wide body.
as far a power goes stock motor vs stock motor, i believe the 2j can handle more power, but im sure someone will jump in and flame me for saying that. i have heard the 2j stock is good for about 800, but take that for nothing but hearsay because i have never seen it in person. as for the ls1 i didnt put it in my car because the exact reason u just stated...its typical...
other things that will happen when u put a 2j in a 7 is u compromise handling a bit. the car now becomes front heavy, not by much, but you can counteract it by putting the battery in the rear and couple other things here and there. i haven't gotten my car on a scale yet so i don't know where it is exactly. hope this in helps ya out. good luck with your build i already like what i see. but hook this thread up with some better pics, lets see some details.

Nice project. Wont be as fun as a rotary on the top end but a hell of a mid range.

If you want to give back to the forum write as much as you can on how to do the swap, issues, and wiring.

ProjectD 06-21-10 04:44 PM

Nice find! I strongly considered a 2JZ swap but sence I'm not shooting for super high HP and I wanted to keep things more simple and cooler I went for the "typical" LS option. Get some better pics up asap.

mopar97 06-21-10 05:42 PM

yeah i will...i got off work today too late, so im grabbing the girls camera and taking good pics in the am. should be up thrusday or so. but i have some to post tonight! i have pics of the custom subframe and actually my mounts were made with an adjustable bolt. so i can actually lower and raise the motor ( i'll have pics too)

only thing that i do not like so far is that the subframe was made to clear the hood with ease. and the 2jz is a very very tall motor. so as of now on stock springs the motor is very low to the ground. if i go coilovers, im not going to lower it more than what it is now. All i will do is up the spring rate and dampening. i "might" also be doing custom tie rod ends since we moved the rack about 2-3" (max) forword. with this we are testing the bump steer as well

but i will say this, my stock hood clears and clears it nicely!!! true sleeper!

wiring is being done asap when the car leaves the shop.

~next is tie rods, driveshaft, radiator/hoses. and shifter extension. then it should be leaving.

Thanks for all the kind words i PROMISE TO GET better pics!!

SpikeDerailed 06-22-10 04:30 PM

Joey I hate you!

2jzTank 06-22-10 08:57 PM

this is real nice, im in the midst of the same swap and i think maybe your pics may help me on mine like how the FMIC is mounted to the car and mounting the Radiator, and wiring even if possible cant wait for pics. i am going the same route as you man

im still wondering what i want to do with the wiring... my friend which i do believe can do it..will cut me a KILLER deal..or go buy the tech 2 motorsports..which will end up being like 900-$1000... :(:icon_tdow:icon_tdow

idk..i DO NEED coilovers..and im talking like 12kg springs up front..if you notice the exterior pics.. the front looks as if it has drop srings on it..NO they are stock springs and struts completely bottomed out!!! the steering rack location has been shifted forward and is getting custom tie rods made with modifed steering knuckles for more turning. bump steer is also going to be corrected. i'll keep all this updated as it happens..

as of now, the turbo is at another shop getting rebuilt. im needing to order a radiator.
~driveshaft needs to be done
~ clutch line and power steering line are going to be made
~ exhaust connected to my already 4" downpipe
~ gauge pods and gauges needing install
~ fuel tank needs to be installed with ( about to order ) 255 pump
~ install my aeromotive 1:1 regulator
~ install fans + shroud after radiator is bought.

and little stuff here and there..yea its a ton to do this swap guys.. :( its way more than a ls1, i'll say that. for the fact so much shit has to be made that you CAN NOT just buy.

but hope you enjoy. any questions, comments, ask/say away. but please if you have something shitty to say, PM about it, dont trash my thread. thanks!

ProjectD 06-30-10 11:52 PM

More pics of the subframe please. It's kinda hard to tell how the engine is supported.

GSXRATED 07-01-10 11:36 PM

The build looks pretty good so far, but if I could make just one suggestion, it would be to reinforce the tube from the motor mount to the subframe. It is currently acting as a large moment arm and is creating a good deal of force on those welds. If I were you, I would add some additional bracing. Perhaps some another tube from the mount to the LCA boxes of the subframe.

ProjectD 07-02-10 12:43 AM

+1

Took the words right out of my mouth.

mopar97 07-02-10 02:41 PM

^^ yea thanks guys, i'll deff tell my Fab guy to do that! thanks.

GSXRATED 07-03-10 02:01 PM

No problem. I'm just trying to look out for a fellow 2JZ FD builder :).

mopar97 07-03-10 05:23 PM

talked to the fab guy..he was actually already concerned about load there..and he is bracing it. i gave him to "ok"

my rebuilt turbo should be ready around wednesday. Also i just ordered my Radiator! when these come in..things will be moving..

also hopefully this coming week my custom torque arm and diff brace will be here. i'll deff get pics of that!

BigIslandSevens 07-03-10 09:35 PM

I went and picked up the old FD tranny from this car. Pretty impressive work. Clean install with amazingly low mounting. Seriously making me rethink my track car powerplant since the fabricator will be somewhat familiar with the issues.

hopefully we will see it rolling soon in Charlotte.
Thanks for the trans man. It is in my car and finishing up the install and testing it tomorrow. will let you know.

Dave

hey joey, I'm sorry our deal didn't work out but I'm glad to see you got yourself an FD. When you get that thing done you should come up to do some sliding in the NE, maybe by then I will be good enough to do some tandem with you
