1uzvfe

I'm debating swapping this particular V8 into my rx7. No, i haven't researched the idea much

and no, i am not hating on rotaries.

I have a friend with a nice built one he is willing to let go for 500 and a few body/paint favors for him.

What does rx7 club think about this idea i have been flirting with?

clokker 04-03-09 07:17 AM

I have no clue what a "1uzvfe" is, so it's hard to say how it might be.

The only conversion cars I'm familiar with have used Chevy V-8's and they were a blast.
Working on a LT1/T-56 3rd gen conversion right now, hoping to be roadworthy in a few more weeks.

When my stock, high-mileage (188k) NA motor decides to give up the ghost, a V-8 conversion is definitely going to be on the table for consideration.

Can't expect people to recognize an engine number, unless you're into those particular cars or it's a hugely popular engine...had to look it up.

Sounds pretty interesting...but still wrong. :)

drugblock12a 04-03-09 08:00 AM

no....just no.

arghx 04-03-09 08:06 AM

it is the Lexus LS400 engine. they are a pain to work on. My friend changed the starter on one and he had to pull the UIM and do a vac and coolant hose job. plus there is almost no aftermarket for this engine and you would have to be pretty skilled with a standalone to wire it up. the power output isn't even that high either, as it is a low displacement V8.

If you have to ask... just stick with GM shit, parts are way easier to get and there is far more knowledge in the swap.

clokker 04-03-09 08:55 AM

IIRC, changing the starter on the LS400 is so stupidly difficult that it's used as a penalty in the 24 Hours of LeMons.

Although I have no problem with the "conversion" issue in general, I can't see the point of switching to an engine with little aftermarket support and known maintenance issues.

Marshessn 04-03-09 11:34 AM

makes sense. the only reason i was looking at this engine, is the fact its pretty "square" or the stroke is close to the size of the bore.

i'm just in a debate between dropping a turbo in my vert, or going with a v8. seems like i could find alot of parts easier with a gm v8, seeing as how it took me 2 weeks to find dang spark plugs for the 13b

torch'd 04-03-09 10:18 PM

i know someone with a 1uz in a ae86.... car moves out like a mutha. i still like the vq45 better

fcjuan 04-05-09 11:07 PM

HKS drag supra = 1uzfe. Not alot of aftermarket support though. Who ever said anything worth doing was going to be easy. The Toyota V8 forum has alot of info on these engines. These engines are rock solid and can be had a a very low price. I'm also thinking about doing this swap.

Donohu40 04-07-09 10:17 AM

If you can get it cheap go for it. It's nice to see something different.

torch'd 04-07-09 02:50 PM

im thinkign about it for the drag ae86 instead of a 13b... still up in the air

pistones 04-15-09 08:40 PM

the 1UZ is actually a pretty good motor, they are smooth. there isn't support for it so most stuff will be custom fabbed. personally i would swap in a BMW V8 from a 540i, comes with a manual 6 speed option as well.

this one is going to kill all yall!!!!

me and a buddy have been thinking about doing a 4bt cummins (3.9L inline 4 turbo deisel) swap in to an old fc, if i had a engine it would be in the works already

SouthSideSlider 04-26-09 12:00 AM

If its the same guy I'm thinking of (capn?) he never finished and last I knew his project was up for sale and being parted out.

Anthug 06-13-09 07:00 AM

I'm thinking of putting a 1UZ-FE into an FC.

Either that or an MX5 (Miata).

There was a supercharged 1UZ-FE in an FC here in New Zealand a couple of years ago, there is a video of it on google videos.

Picking up the 1UZ next weekend and the FC too. We'll see what happens. Depends on what condition the FC is in. Already have the Miata (an auto) that would make a good donor. The 1UZ / Miata swap has been done several times already.

Sketch_hs 06-15-09 11:00 AM

fuck yeah do it!

RWDCelicadude 06-25-09 07:47 PM

The 1UZ is a great engine, extremely smooth, broad powerband, and if it's an early one they take very well to boost. :) It's also a very short engine lengthwise and will probably sit as far back as the 13B if not farther. If you get an early one they have seperate computers for the engine and trans so you can use a manual without issue, the later ones have it all integrated into one unit and you have to trick the thing into thinking it still has an auto behind it.

This thread needs some Pics. Here is a teaser. Sorry for crappy celly pic.

Still alot to be sorted out. This is just a fun mock up to see where i'm at.

FbDrift 06-28-09 07:40 PM

great job! i think youll like the reliablility of the 1uzfe's. an all aluminum block, thick ass rods, aluminum heads, quad cam, sounds like sex, what year is your block out of? the early LS400 had thicker rods than latter models of LS and SC's.

when i had my celica supra, people on celicasupra.com swapped these puppies in all the time.

if you havent already, check out www.lextreme.com. they have a lot of fun parts.

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=aPL89...eature=related

as far as a tranny are you using a W58 or R154? you will need a custom bell housing since no 1uzfe ever came with a manual behind it. youll have to probably get it from austrailia. i would recomend the R154, it is alot stonger and holds up with 700 hp cars. they can deffinitly take the abuse.

fcjuan 06-29-09 06:52 PM

It's out of a '92 LS400, which has a front sump :( I really neeeded a SC400 with the rear sump to clear crossmember, steering rack, and sway bar. Good thing sumps interchange. If anybody on here happens to have one to trade that would be awesome. Tell your friends

I've been on Lextreme quite a bit lately getting ready to do this swap. I still have a ton to learn.

I'm thinking W58 for budget reasons. Although i'd like to have a r154. Either way There is a semi local guy, in Utah, that goes by the username Super Runner on the lextreme forum that casts bellhousings for both and also has flywheels. I'm kinda taking my time to try to find great deals on parts and making sure I do things right.

Anthug 07-01-09 11:16 PM

Good luck on the Swap!

I am doing the same swap - 1UZ into an FC.

Plan is to use S5 gearbox with an adaptor on the U1 bellhousing.

Trouble is trying to find a rear sump.

well if worse came to worse, you could make your own...
