A local guy built a 13b powered Beetle. I haven't seen it since he finished it, but I imagine these things are terrifying...

Update:
I'm currently wiring the whole thing. Megasquirt fuel pump ect. Got the Fuel pump bracket welded in and bolted the fuel pump and regulator. Also have the fuel lines plumbed. I had to slow myself down abit as I noticed that my anxiousness was making me do sloppy work. Once I get all the wiring right, I can start plumbing a temporary cooling system to get the Mega squirt tuned. I'm not going to run turbo until I have a good cooling system. I'll get some more pics ASAP, it's not pretty but function is my concern right now... |

Hey there, I'm getting ready to rip apart the concept one dune buggy my dad gave me and going to install the S4 13B i still have that was going to go into my FB before I sold it.
I'm trying to figure out what I would need in order to out it in the buggy. Could you list what you used to put it in your bug... I know you needed a Kennedy adapter... but was there anything else? Thanks. Keep up the work on the Bug. |

Thanks. Keep up the work on the Bug. Well first off, yes you will need the Kennedy adapter. I do also believe that there are other makers of the adapter but Kennedy is one of the most recognized, plus they sell the whole kit as far as bolting the engine to the type 1,2,or 3 vw 4 bolt transaxle. The kit is very inexpensive (under $500) in my opinion (and I'm broke) and will come with the clutch, flywheel, counter weight ( a very important and hard to find part) and mating plate with hardware... You will need to think far ahead of your self with this project. Try to plan ahead every step. For example, you may need to convert your current transaxle to a 12 volt starter, or maybe even convert it to a 6 volt starter. It just depends on what you end up doing. I found that I had a really hard time starting my engine with a 12 volt starter using a badly tuned carburetor. It just doesn't have the rotational speed for the rotary engine. But a 6 volt starter run on 12 volts will, but at the cost of beating up the fly wheel and starter. But the good news is that there are differnt startes that do fit the transaxle such as the sr-17 which normaly goes on porches I believe (don't quote me) and does not have to use the pilot or in other word it's self supporting. I like this starter for that reason but even though it's a huge starter, it has a slow rotation speed also. I am currently sticking with my 12 volt run on 12 volts that I bought at Auto Zone for $40, I don't remember the part# but it's any of the 67 and up starters. So you can see the long journey this may be for you. Maybe more or less, but there are a lot of things to acount for. If you run fuel injection, that's going to be great for the engine but requires alot more from you. Carburation drove me crazy. It seems simple but it's a Physicists nightmare. I like carbs too, but with the rotary there are trade off's to be aware of. Don't be discouraged by me though, as many other people have great success with carbs. I'm goin with Mega Squirts full programable ECU, as it's right up my alley with electronics. Ok this is getting long, but I just want to say that if you have any questions at all please feel free to ask, I love to help and see other thrive with their own rotary projects. Yes, the fuse melted (10A, not 20) Yes, my engine did overheat But there was no damage.. still running strong without burning coolant or oil |
Awesome! I'm currently doing this swap, but I'm going N/A and using the factory ECM. I will do a megasquirt setup when I swap over to turbo.

I plan to place my 6-port 13b in to my VW with some of the highest constraints. First and possibly the most difficult rule, NO CUTS to the car. TWO, deck lid must close. Three, must be a daily driver. Four, would like to have the radiator in the engine compartment (REAR). I know Im asking much, but I'ts my goal and I feel I can do it. Here's the real catch. I'm broke!! I make 10 bucks and hour and I have three kid's, So you can see where the real constraint is. Later I would also like to have some boost and A/C. So far I have the engine in and running with bypassed radiator and a short exhaust header. I was able to take it for a test run and all I can say is WOW!!!! So I you have question about the build feel free to ask. Also If you have any info that could help me please do so. I am looking for people with the highest of custom info and what the engines full capabilities are such as, will I save cooling effectivity if I run the exhaust sleeves. Can I have power and good fuel economy N/A or with a turbo. Thank you all for checking me out, Hope to hear from you all... R.HOLGUIN I have a type 3 frame with a fiberglass kit on it. This allows me to have a rad and intercooler sitting over the transaxle. ( with a blade that scoops air from under the car and pushes it up. Most cut the front out and put rad there. Good luck.
