13b Nissan Skyline with twin Garrett GT35/40 turbos! First ever drive

So this is a vid of my mate John's R32 Nissan Skyline that I am finishing off for him. He's been here the past week so we got it running and drive-able so he could take it for a lap around the car park for the first time... this car has been in the build for 7 years now and no expense has been spared. It had been sitting in a panel shop for the last 2 years hence all the dust etc and it will be coming to live with me for awhile so i can finish it off as there are still bits and pieces to do i.e install the electric power steering pump so we can turn it in car parks without having to do a 64 point turn! Still a heap of work to do but its mainly all the small fiddly finishing stuff...

the goodies...

Large extend port 13b turbo from an FC
2x Garrett GT35/40 turbo's
Microtech ecu
Greddy R32 radiator
Greddy GTR intercooler
Custom exhaust, manifold etc etc
GTR Widebody kit
all aftermarket suspension linkages
Sparco racing fuel filler
momo race seats, steering wheel and gear knob

aaaaaand a heap of other stuff i haven't been able to remember or know what brands etc they are as i just havent had time to look closely enough plus its not my car and i didnt fit all the parts...

The video:

More pics to come when it comes to stay with me after the auto electrician finishes the wiring in a week or so :)

Only one in the world that I know of, well apart from the 20b R33 skyline in aussie.....

This thing is going to be lethal once its tuned and its a real sleeper!

rotary-guy 01-26-12 11:33 PM

That's a sweet and very different swap, that damn glimmer belt drive would drive me nuts lol

youngfc 01-27-12 12:23 AM

thats just plane cool man good job. hows she spoolin ?

I agree with everything you've said, except, where did you get your definition of sleeper?

The skyline is one of the most recognized performance cars in the world, that one has a GTR widebody kit, the car's nickname is GODZILLA, and that gilmer drive whines louder than a preteen.

Sweet car indeed, but POLAR OPPOSITE of sleeper.

i know what you are saying but these cars (skylines) are so common here, even GTR's are pretty common, even R35's are and I showed the vid to a nissan lover yesterday and hes like "oh is it supercharged?" then it was "what the F*ck, thats wrong!" then he got all pissy about it....

As far as sleeper goes, its not all riced up on the outside, doesnt have big gaping holes in the bonnet or big graphics saying "look at me ive got a rotor in me" etc etc, it looks fairly stock apart from the wheels. You could look at it and think it was a GTR then you would prob only wonder what the whine was and possibly think its supercharged.... over here this is pretty much a sleeper, you might not realise what it was until the bonnet was opened....

i gave it a bit of shit when i drove it before John but its not tuned yet so it didnt "take off" Hard to say what it will be like but i can imagine its gonna be scary when it hits full boost but it may be a bit laggy down low.

StavFC 01-29-12 02:10 PM

Nuts, but in a good way.

Is the gilmer pulley setup there just to stop the waterpump slipping, or is it dry sump? Sounds nuts.

abc 01-29-12 09:57 PM

Killer n cool looking engine setup!!

Its just a bolt on kit, doesnt really serve any purpose other then to sound like a supercharger...... pretty common over here to be honest and just sounds cool :)

Im wondering if i should keep this updated with the rest of the mods/build process that I am dong to finish it off for the owner..... then its off for a re-paint cause the paint job is seriously that crap! There goes $10,500 down the drain!

There isnt a heap left to do compared to what has already been done, however i may be changing some things so they are more functional i.e converting the speedo gauge from mechanical to electrical (possibly with FD parts), handbrake to hydraulic with stock look, sound system and possibly a dual front caliper setup..... and I just ordered 5 Defi Link advantage gauges for it today... fun times, i just wish it was my toy that i got to spend all this $$ on ha ha

RotaryEvolution 01-30-12 11:01 PM

fuck it, i say have fun with it and piss off all the nissan drift kids with the sacrelige.

not like we can do anything about all the V8 swaps, same difference but more widespread on our end.

Ha ha thats the plan, there is already plenty of hate on this conversion but its funny how the nissan and toyota guys are happy to slap one of their motors into one of our rotary powered cars eh!

So the owner talked to me last night and told me he has a NOS kit on the way over to me for the car..... im not sure how much power he is expecting to make in this thing but i dont think he wants to be beaten in a race.. like EVER! ha ha

rxspeed7 01-31-12 09:19 PM

Holy shit, I love it. By far coolest skyline I have seen in a while!!!!

Have you dynoed it yet?

No it hasnt been dyno'd yet.. its at the auto electrician at the mo getting the wiring all finished then I need to install the new waterpump cause the old one is leaking... plus a few bits and pieces that need finishing up on it like the MR2 electric power steering pump... trying to steer this tank is like trying to turn a big rig truck on flat tires at the mo!

Im interested to see what power this makes though! then ill add the NOS!

BADSVN2000 01-31-12 09:37 PM

oh and the brakes, something seriously wrong with the brakes! you can hardly even push it with 2 people! I would be keen to get onto it now but I dont want to get in the auto sparkys way

Tem120 01-31-12 10:16 PM

umm is the brake booster working? did you hook up the vacume line onto it?

I didnt touch anything to do with the brakes on it but i plan to get it up on the hoist next week to see whats wrong with it. I will be going over the whole car and checking everything to make sure bolts etc are tight and things have been done properly and above all, safely! id hate for some suspension linkage to not be tight and John ends up killing himself in it due to that!

Until now, a bunch of other people/companies have been doing the work on it. The owner lives in Australia and i live here in NZ and fortunately for me due to some bad workmanship, alot of wasted money and a pissed off owner I have been asked to step in and get the car finished to a much higher standard with far more attention to detail than it has previously been given. Being the guys mate, he knows that he can trust me and that i will do a good job and finish the car.

So the car has been at the auto electricians the past couple of weeks and I managed to get down there after some parts for it turned up, 5 Defi gauges hand delivered to New Zealand from Japan!
Attachment 724785
Then managed to get a couple of them in and wire up most of the sensors, i only have the fuel pressure sender to put in now, I am just waiting to go and get some fittings... Mondays job..
Attachment 724786
I also mounted the oil temp sender
Attachment 724787
I decided to mount it where the OMP used to be... Im pretty sure this will be a good place...
Attachment 724788
and I had to remove the intercooler and piping to weld on a boost nipple and i found this on the intercooler... no wonder it wasnt boosting hard at all when we drove it the other week!! its off getting welded up ready for monday.
Attachment 724789

While I was messing around with the car, I had a look at the speedo connection (FD gearbox) and i could see no way that the speedo cable could fit on the end of the modified FD speedo drive as it would hit the trans tunnel, plus it was leaking.. So I talked to the owner and he asked if we could convert it to electronic speedo... The R32 is cable driven but i thought ive done something similar (converted a 6spd Altezza gearbox to manual drive for an AE86 3S-GE conversion I did..

Anyway I sourced an R33 dash cluster for $40 and pulled the guts out and began sizing things up and with some plastic shaved here and there i made it fit nice and snug and it came out looking factory! It may need to be recalibrated but its in and will work and register speed for now :) here are some pics, oh and the owner is happy as a pig in shit!

and finally, the finished product!

At what point in the RPM band does one gt35 per rotor start to make power?

Not sure as yet as the engine hasnt been tuned. I am still prob a few weeks away from getting it tuned as i can only work on a few hours a day and there is a lot to get done...

So ive managed to get a fair bit done today and over the past couple of weeks, no point in listing everything but as its mainly small stuff but ive got all the defi gauge senders installed and 3 of the 5 gauges fitted (I am just waiting on a dual carbon pillar mount to turn up for the other two) but i will mock them up soon anyway.

I have had a few setbacks, I dropped the nice polished twin intercooler pipe off to a local business called Pit Stop to have the boost nipple fitted to it for the boost controller and after a week of waiting it was finally finished but they had wrecked the pipe!!
Attachment 724794

I then took the pipe after going ballistic at the guy that wrecked it to a guy I knew of and is very well known here in NZ, I needed someone who I knew that could fix it! So thanks to Ronnie Lim of RSL Automotive he had this fixed in a day! it came out better than I expected!
Attachment 724795

After I had it re-polished I installed it in the car with a new air fitting, this time I went for a 90 degree one but as it was brass I decided to paint it in crinkle black to match the rest of the black accents in the engine bay :), the owner is happy with my attention to detail, now that's what I like to hear.
Attachment 724796

next up after replacing the water pump and fixing the dodgy wiring on the in tank fuel pump was to get it running again and surprise, after re filling the surge tank and priming the system the engine sprung to life again!

I found one of the HKS shocks was leaking too so I sent it off to be repaired but sadly no parts in NZ and too expensive to fix (NZD$550 a corner!!) so we are going to order some Teins... and then I started on the Hydraulic handbrake.. see next post..

BADSVN2000 03-06-12 10:54 PM

6 Attachment(s)
So I made a decent dent in doing this hydraulic handbrake conversion.. now I got this idea from a fellow RX7club member TURSTY who did pretty much the same thing to his FD..

Anyway, I took an off the shelf D2 Racing handbrake (e-brake in the states) and pulled it apart...
Attachment 724797
I started off but removing the gay as hell MOMO handbrake handle that was fitted on the stock handbrake lever, pulled the D2 handle off the D2 lever, measured it up and figured it would look 100 times better if i slapped a 19mm hole right through the middle... so after some playing around on the lathe it went on perfectly!!
Attachment 724798
and
Attachment 724799

I then had to make the master cylinder throw rod work with the stock nissan handbrake lever....
Attachment 724800
it wasnt going to work that well and stay strong so I decided to make a new one..... ooh yeah!
Attachment 724801
and finally hooked up and bolted in to pivot when the stock handbrake moves..
Attachment 724802
now I just need to make a new bracket for the master cylinder to sit in so it can mount to the trans tunnel under the centre console, that can be tomorrows job....

Also got word that the new Wilwood front brakes are on their way from the mighty USA and the NOS kit should arrive soon too... got a heap of work to do! now to find a welder so i can make the bracket and mount the MR2 power steering pump brackets that i made yesterday...
