1.8 DOHC Swap Starts July 5.
This is what im going for.
http://a381.ac-images.myspacecdn.com...faccb27e7c.jpg I think that will look real good in my engine bay. I dont think it will be too hard to swap in i have the no how and the skill to make everything but i may need some ideas. Fuel is easy to make happen( thank you mazda for inline fuel pump) Engine mounts are simple to make once i get the position figured out. Exhaust will be easy but not fun. Computer is easy but ill have to make a custom dash. Tranny mount is agian easy but will take positioning ????If there is anything im not thinking of but you guys are let me know.????? I am planing on doing the full write up and pics of everything i make and things that i buy. So if this swap goes well others can follow it. |
i sure hope your going to put that in a civic......
|
Your forgetting the rotary.
|
as many rotaries as he has gone through, i dont blame him... i was going to do this when mine give out.. but i hope you plan on doing a custom ITB because the kit is like 2k with a reflashed ecu, and like 3k with a tuned standalone. but with a custom manifold, megasquirt and motorcycle itb's you should be able to pull it off...let me know how it goes, maybe then you can help me with mine when i do it... but when you buy a 1.8l motor, dont get the 91 year engine, it had a short nose crank that was prone to breaking.
|
what 1.8 are you using? honda B18? miata? if youre using a honda, what tranny are you using? what are you building this car for?
ive seen a fast as B18 powered hatch at my local strip consistantly run 10s and break into the 9s. it was a guys DD also. |
i was assuming the miata...
|
That is a miata engine.
|
correct its a Mazda Engine.
I picked up the engine today and it has 56,000 on it and i got it for 100$ A used 5sp runs about 150$ and i have to find an ecu and most of the stock sensors and fuel system, no point in spending all that money if i cant get a stock one to work first. |
are you going to modify the stock FB gas tank and make the feed line bigger?
|
Im not going to use the stock fuel tank Im building a new one.
But it would not be hard to do ill make sure i include how to change the fuel delivery in my write up. |
whats the update?
|
no boost=fail
|
all that work for what, 160bhp?
|
K I was thinking about that the whole time. Like the above statement. But I wasn't sure if these were suppose to be an engine with alot of potential or what, but I mean even a stock 350 or even a stock 302 would be better then that man. But wouldn't mind seeing pictures of though
|
Wow thats a great price!! :) I got the "hookup" on an engine for my miata and it cost $550 and it had around 70k on it.

The problem is when you toss a small block cast iron into a FB it throws the hole turning dynamics of the car off.
I wanted something light and that could put out if "i spent the money" around 300 hp. |
sounds like a fun project, let me know if you need a tranny as I have an extra.
|
honestly man I am not tryin to convince you go sell that and buy a v8 but the whole "weight ratio" "it being ALOT heavier then a rotary" and "will fubar your turning" isn't true man. Perfect example is my buddy has a FB with a 355 in it and he uses it in both drag racing and in road racing and in road racing he has one of the best overall vehicles out there. And I have driven it also and it takes corners pretty nice I must say. But again please dont get all bent outta shape thingy that I am trying to say my way is better or anything like that. I am just stating my opinion on it from first hand experience thats all.

Project scrubbed for this year look forr an update this spring.
|
some people like revy little engines. any word on using rx7 transmissions? I know that they are close to miata transmissions but I have never heard of anyway you could bolt a BP engine to any RX7 transmission. does anyone know?
|
They have adapter plates out there for any tranny mating. I know Miata guys have used rx7 tranny in the miata.
You can boost about 12 psi easy on that b18. I did 18psi on my b16. You will get about 275 rwhp in doing so. It is a fun motor to play with and easy to replace... 5 years ago i got a replacement for 400 bucks and parted out what i did not need (actual cost at the end 150-200.oo). I recommend using the miata tranny w/ your rear. The gears are tight the miata so the low output isnt so bad.... and the rear is a 430 if i recall. The 7-tranny w/ a rx7 rear... too long in my opinion. |
After getting the BP in there why not jump in and swap on a FM Turbo kit? Outside of being OEM reliable it is also a seriously well detailed conversion for the BP 1.8L.
Look up Kieth at Flying Miata for more info on the kits available. |
I should really finish this project before i start the Mach 5.
But i think a movie care is better then miata'd 7 |
