Whizbang's RX-2

so I go by Whizbang on every other everything. anyway....

So I got wind of this car from my friend James a while back, but I finally decided to pick it up!

Its a 12/1971 Rx-2 coupe! Last time it ran, according to the owner, was about 79 or 80. I would be the third owner of the car. Now, it has been sitting outside for 34 years so the paint is beyond faded, some rust where water got in and sat (but nothing too major), and dent and dings. BUT the car is dead straight, never hit, and the doors shut perfect. Also got to sort some bits from the back half of an RX2 sitting on the site that was cut in half a long time ago. (good for a rear bumper and taillights!)

I dont recognize the wheels on the car at all either.

Game plan is to take it down, get it on a rotisserie and give it a good working over. Eyeing up some RE speed bits that can work with some left over FB stuff I have. Etc etc. We shall see. Lots of body to do in the meantime! Maybe a 3 year project.

That's the hood it should have! It's a 72 model, built 12/71. If it was a true '71 it would have the antenna hole behind the rear windshield on the rhs, it would have different door panels that were '71 only without the chrome strip. I can't see inside but '71 had dome lights above each door not one in the center. Wiper covers on '71s were painted body Color, not black.

Lol he beat me to it. Nice score, I'd love to see more shots of the cut up RX2 rear!

yea 12/71 build. hood should be the original that came on the it. car was parked not THAT long after and it matches all the colors (what little of the green there was left). Id be curious how the original color looked. Where could i find the paint code?

also a question, can you get replacement windshields for these things?

Paint code is still their.... Look right in front of the coolant over flow... The sticker is still there... Should be a letter and a number..

Nice find Gravity! Take good care of the alloy wheels as they were an original Mazda accessory wheel in 1973-1974 for RX2 and RX3. Highly sought after now for people doing a stock restoration. Don't sell them for cheap!

It looks like the car would be this color based on the outside

but when you poped the hood, or in the door jams it looks like its this color. This is also what a 71 looks like

a while ago there were some in New Jersey, not sure if there still are.

Whizbang 04-09-13 06:50 PM

yea it SHOULD be that second green, but its just that sun faded. Hell the laminate between the glass in the windshield has bubbles in it...

Whizbang 04-09-13 06:52 PM

i found the wheels rather cool. they were paint matched to the car it seems too. I have some old Riken mesh wheels i might drive around on. Ill probably hold on to these stockers for the time being. Very unique!

Hey could you do me (and yourself) a favor and take pictures of the wires that go to the engine, and around the horn area. this cars been untouched for so long its a safe bet that everything is still going to where it needs to go assuming rats havn't gotten to the wires.

Whizbang 04-11-13 07:32 PM

ill try to get that for you this weekend

That chart up there is for 70-71 so your color isnt there. When you go to get the car painted just have a part where the paint is still good so they can color match it.
If those headlights Say Koito they're worth some $ to the right person, so if you're not keeping the stock headlights be careful with them.

good to know! im going to start assessing everything after i vacuum the literal crap out of it. Also, can i still get keys made from a dealer? or maybe take the ignition to lock smith?

John McBeth 04-15-13 11:52 AM

I'd think a lock smith would be able to help. They used to have replicas of the original Mazda rotary keys on Ebay Australia, but I checked and I guess they dont anymore. this is the closest I could find. Should be 1 key for the door and 1 key for the ignition. Btw check in the fenders and other places under the car, I found a spare set of keys to my car in the fenderwell in a magnetic box. I had a field day, unfortunatly they weren't a original set of keys.

Take the ignition out(drill out tamper proof bolts) and take it to a locksmith should be about $40 to make a key. The doors and trunk are different so take one lock out and they can do that too. I'd budget $100 to be able to open and potentially start the car isn't that bad. Hopefully the doors trunk and gas door weren't changed back in the day. The original ignition key is kidney shaped. Good luck
