I've contacted him previously. His prices are very high for parts that have virtually no market and he's unwilling to come down. Personally, I'm also not willing to pay $99 US for one "Cosmo" badge.

Hi Aaron, I've been subscribed to your thread for a while and have enjoyed watching your progress. I picked up a 1976 RX5 Cosmo as well but I don't know how to tell if it has a 13B or a 12A. Also, this one isn't in any shape fixable. With that said, I read that there was someone on eBay trying to tip people off. Well, mine has quite a few re-useable parts if you're interested. I'm located in Anchorage, Alaska. I could sell you some parts for a reasonable price if you're interested.

I'm still alive and working on the car. This summer has been busy, busy and busy, so I've not been able to spend as much time on the car as I would have wanted. The driver side sheet metal is slowly coming together. Soon enough I'll get off my butt and make an interm episode to at least let people know things are still progressing.


The easiest way to tell is to just look at the rotor housings. They will be marked 12A or 13B.

June, July, August, September, October and November; Hey, I wasn't kidding when I said in episode 22 that it would be a bit of a wait for the next one! In that time I've been as hard at work on the Cosmo as I could manage, which unfortunately is not as much as I would have liked. It's been a busy summer with plenty taking me out of the shop. Even still, I've been working as much as I can and have picked up the pace over the last two months to the point where the driver side sheet metal is almost done. So what's in this episode, strangely titled as "Part 22.5"? Well, with the help of my special guest Rose Cora Perry, I answer some of the most common questions about the project. And along the way, there are a few tips and tricks thrown in, as well as a little bit of why the driver side repairs have taken so long. This episode is a little different, so I hope you enjoy...

p.s. any preference on rebuild kits?

I've almost always used Atkins rebuild kits. The gasket quality can be hit and miss sometimes (for example, sometimes you get OEM intake manifold gaskets, sometimes generic) but all the important parts are either OEM or high quality aftermarket. And I've even gotten used to installing those damn Viton oil o-rings.

At this point I'm expecting the front end sheet metal work to be done by the end of December at the latest, so I've been stocking upon parts for all thefun work about to happen. Videos won't have the same lag as during the sheet metal.

yep I use atkins kits for soft seals, maint parts like apex seals, side seals,bearings Mazda whole price and is in town .

Part 23: Middle Intake Manifold Fabrication - My 76 Mazda RX-5 Cosmo Restoration
 

After part 22.5 was posted, it took the remainder of November and December to finish the driver side sheet metal. I worked my butt off to get it done before January 1st, and indeed, accomplished that task so I was able to start the new year sheet metal free! So I am happy to say that episode 23 is sheet metal free! In this episode I fabricate the parts necessary for my unique combination of intake manifolds, combining an FD RX-7 upper intake with an GSL-SE RX-7 lower intake. Doing so requires the fabrication of a custom middle intake manifold out of aluminium, complete with provisions for secondary fuel injectors. You'll see me build flanges from scratch (using my new drill press), measure and cut intake runners, TIG weld it all together, port match the flanges to the gaskets and runners, install injector bungs, curse at the difficult welding I caused, add -6 AN bungs to a stock RX-7 primary fuel rail, and build a fuel rail for the newly fabricated manifold.

Well done. Having read about and seen the ECU you've chosen, I can understand why you went with it versus an MS3 kit. Completely sealed unit that can survive immersion in water sounds like something that can last for a few decades.

When DIYAutoTune offered me an MS3-Pro (mine is actually a preproduction unit) I jumped at the chance. Having built and modded many MegaSquirts in the past I had nothing of course against going the standard MS3 route with the Cosmo, but when the MS3-Pro became an option I couldn't resist. I'm looking quite forward to exploiting many of it's features (AC control, check engine light, etc.) and knowing that the vastly improved VR circuit won't need to be tweaked to get a stable CAS signal. The new harness is also a vast improvement over the standard MS3, so no need to take it apart to add a shielded wire for the 2nd CAS wheel or perform other mods.

Wait so the pro did away with those piece of shit signal pots? Maybe ill look into one.

is still a pita to get in without a trans attached unless it's an old chevy and you can take the front clip off. From the looks of things it's comming together nicely.
