TII trans shifter location mod VIDEO!!!

Ok, so I took the time to make a video on how to shorten the shifter linkage on a TII transmission so that it will fit into an old school car and retain the stock shifter location. MODS BETTER STICKY THIS! lol

Sorry for mistakes, I had a long day and no tripod so I was doing the taping with one hand. LOL.

One note I forgot that should be clear to most but you never know. When drilling the new cotter pin hole in the shift rod it must be in the same relation to the old hole- perfectly in line. That's why it is a lot easier with a mill. If you guys need help, just hit me up.

Good job jay,if you use a fb trans shifter housing (not the tailshaft housing just shifter part)you can get it an extra inch towards the front of car and will be perfectly centered on the cars original opening.

ultimatejay 09-13-12 12:10 PM

Good to know Dave but then you have to buy another trans :)

turbo_dave 09-13-12 12:38 PM

Lol true.i always just mod the TII and have the mounting holes welded an inch further back.

knowledgeable finds .yummmm

rxtasy3 09-15-12 09:22 PM

u did the exact same thing i did back in 93 to make an 83 tranny fit in my 75 808.

RX2-Mazda-Fan 09-16-12 11:05 AM

Awesome how to! Thanks ultimatejay!

A pic is worth a bunch, but a vid is worth more thanks. Going to mod my 88 TII to fit my
85 GSL-SEt project. Was going to just notch the car but this makes it look too easy. Side question, will 2nd Gen short shifter work in the in my SE shifter housing?

mattallac 01-04-13 10:29 PM

mod

I'v done a lot of these and the only thing I do different is I section the dust tube (cut a 103 mm section out of the center) with a pipe cutter and weld it in the center to keep the rubber ends intact . awesome video great for the first timer . thanks turbo dave never knew that about the fb to the turbo trans , glad I waited to do my turbo trans now I can do it your way for my deuce .

chino_rx3 01-05-13 12:51 AM

Seen It done but your way so much cleaner lol

turbo_dave 01-05-13 02:59 AM

Here is what I do when I cant get a hold of fb shifter housing, for a total of 5" shorter.

Two fc shifter housings, one modified to get an extra inch shorter

Yes that is the way to do the dust tube, but not everyone has access to a welder or know how to weld so that's why I showed it this way.

Like I said great video not trying to take away your thunder ,but for the first timer both options would have been a +. I guess you could say how do you drill the hole accurately if you don't have a mill or drill press?not everyone owns those tools ether .

Without a mill, you can't get it perfect. It's almost impossible with hand tools to get it perfect. But if you measure really well and use a drill press you can get by.

mattallac 01-06-13 12:02 AM

my point was not everyone has a mill or drill press , just like you said not everyone has a welder .

That's why in my video I said if you have access to a mill use it if not you can hand drill or use a drill press. Next time I will show how to do it with a hack saw, hammer and punch and stone tools that way I can cover everyone! geez

look guy , If you want to make a video and show people how to do something don't take the half ass approach and blame it on other people not having a welder or the skill to use it .If you section the dust tube you would have showed it in your video . maybe you should just take the compliments I have given you and no respond with some smart ass comments for the lack of knowledge you displayed in your video.

No need for the Hostility, Appreciate that ultimatejay took the time to share some knowledge.

mattallac 01-06-13 01:32 AM

I think I have given ultimate jay a compliment , and I didn't appreciate his comments to me .

This is why people don't spend time trying to help out. It's jackbags like you that ruin it for everyone. Like I said before- I agree with you on welding the dust tube but there are probably less than 1% of people on this forum that know how to weld or have a welder. I didn't show in my video using a mill did I? No I just merely stated that is the best way but you could use a hand drill or drill press.
So if you think you can make a better video than instead of nit picking someone else's effort get off your lazy butt and make one.

Cheers

marking this for reference since i will have to do it soon.

Thanks!

hi.

Just want to say thanks for making this video.

Just did my REPU T2 box, but took it even further forward to make the stick pop up right trough the hole.

Welded the tube and hand drilled the shaft. Doable, but you have to measure and be careful.

Thanks again for the video. It really makes it easy to do this project.

Now I can't wait for spring to kick in, and start "spending" rear rubber, hehe. 13b RE, single t78 and a stock locked B2000 rear end.
