Should I buy a rusty REPU?

Everything's all there: embelems, lights, grill, etc. Interior's been redone a few years ago. It runs but smokes sometimes. Has dellorto and light flywheel, but unfortunately it has lots of rust. Mostly surface rust but a few holes in the bed. I can derust, patch and roll a Herculiner in the bed myself for less than $200.

I don't mind getting out the drill with wire wheel brush and derusting and getting a 'top of the line' Earl Scheib paint job.

Let me know what you think. :p:

That's a tough call. All the rust shown in the pics can be dealt with, there's just so MUCH of it. How much for the truck? -WG

I think I've seen that one for sale before, did it come from the bay area? Mike

Jeff20B 10-20-02 08:32 PM

Did that truck come from either Idaho or Washington?

DriveFast7 10-20-02 09:32 PM

$1000 and in California. Considering the carb and flywheel can be sold for $500 it might just be worth it.

I do have a nice 4.5" angle grinder with wire wheel attachment and could grind all that rust off in a weekend. Timely part is primering it back up and sanding smooth. Chassis would get two coats of black epoxy paint - tough stuff.

Interior's all done, and has nice gauges so I won't have to spend time or $ in there.

So I might go for it.

I wouldn't use a wire wheel on the body but rather one of those scotchbrite discs in an air grinder would be better. Wire wheels will "pull" the metal too much. You need to treat the rust as well. I like Os-Pho (phosphoric acid), but there are other neutralizing products available at automotive paint stores. I think you are deluding yourself if you think you can deal with the entire rust issue in a weekend, it will require a LOT of work, but you're right, the carb and flywheel alone are worth $. I'd say go for it! -WG

thanks wankelguy for the scotch brite pad, thats a good idea. yeah, it think it's worth it. no, i'm not deluded, i know it's a lot of work to completely derust. i just said i can grind the rust down in a weekend. primering, sanding, and paint prep are another story.

Other than the tailgate rib being broken that truck isn't bad at all.

DriveFast7 10-23-02 09:27 PM

Yeah. Anyone in california have a good straight complete tailgate and hinges?

rxrotary2_7 10-25-02 08:00 AM

Wankelguy 10-25-02 11:03 AM

The Courier tailgates are slightly different in appearance but will fit. -WG

How difficult would it be to put a 12a or 13b into a courier body?

wam 10-31-02 12:03 AM

yea knight1976, i like to know the same thing!

85RX7GS 10-31-02 06:56 AM

I would buy it.

knight1976 10-31-02 08:05 AM

Way easier to find a courier body than it is to find a repu. I guess my biggest question is does the cross memer have to be changed for a 12a or 13b? Or does it have to be changed no matter what? Cmon gurus help a brother out.

DriveFast7 11-01-02 05:55 PM

I BOUGHT IT! I'm almost done going thru it and doing routing maintenance. Got the big rust spots off the hood and roof via rust grinder attachment for drill.

Floor has surface rust too but I just bought some POR-15 rust stabilizer to take care of that and bed rust.

Later,
Brad
