Rotary Mr2 spyder

Ok as some of you may know the 1zz engine in the mr2 spyder is garbage.... and I'm a rotary guy....

So here we go, I'm going to be dropping a 13b into the rear of the car. I will be adapting the engine to the spyders 5speed transmission using an adapter plate. My biggest concern is oil pan clearance, modifying the subframe isn't a issue im more worried about having to modify to fit around the axles. Anyway I'll be updating from time to time.

Can anyone help me a bunch and trace the pattern of the s4 rear iron bellhousing flange? pm me if you need my address. I don't know if it would be easier to make an adapter plate or to weld the fcs bellhousing flange to a modified spyder transmission.

Thanks guys,
-Austin

Good luck! It will be a great project! Not many people have done a transversal rotary conversion.

Well, this is really an interesting one. I too have a MR2 Spyder. Love the car as it is light and tons of fun, but that 1zz is junk. I had to do a rebuild at 70k miles. It smoked like crazy.

Anyway, I anxiously await your progress. I have a 5 speed trans out of the car( I switched to a monkey wrench 6 speed), so if you need measurements, just ask.

Good luck

Wow, never heard of a swap like this before but it would suit the car nicely. I'm assuming 6-port NA, but which engine exactly are you running? Also how much power can the Toyota trans. handle out of curiosity? Looking forward to progress on this swap as I've also heard terrible thing about the 1ZZ. Good luck!

Very cool. The MR2 Spyder will post the same slalom and skidpad numbers as an Elise on equivalent tires.

Sounds like your plan is good. I once heard from a guy who put a rotary in a 323 FWD with an adapter plate. Got kicked out of his first autox as soon as they saw how fast it was.

The MR2s trans can hold reasonable power. There are some who with turbo have made over 400 motor hp. Fairly high torque numbers too, near 300 lbs. So to the wheels 325 up. The stock 5 speed holds it. There are many heavy duty options, but to start, I would simply try the factory 5 speed. I really want to see this happen. Hopefully I can copy you!!
