Rotary miata!

I'm in the process of putting a 1991 six port non turbo into my 1997 miata. I rebuilt and ported the engine myself. I also built a megasquirt for it. I've been doing this build for almost a year now, and it's almost done. I expect to have it ready to go in the next couple of weeks.

current status:
https://i301.photobucket.com/albums/...9/IMG_0123.jpg

quick grocery list:
pineapple racing port templates
tweakit gilmer pullies
fidanza aluminum flywheel
atkins rebuild kit
custom mandrel bent long tube header
stock intake manifold for now, probably itbs later.
custom fittings for stainless lines, 16 AN for coolant, then the regular 10an lines going to a stock fc oil cooler
omp blocked off, premix
walbro 190

the transmission is a hybrid of parts from a miata and rx7. the gearbox and tailshaft are from a 99 miata, and the bellhousing and clutch fork and that hardware are from an s4 non turbo. This makes it really easy because it bolts right up to the miata power plant frame, and I can use the stock driveshaft.

Lots of people on this forum have helped me out with advice and parts, and I just wanted to show you guys <3

My next step is dropping my front subframe. It will have to be cut up a decent amount so that the oil pan will fit, and for motor mounts.

fucking awesome.

sharingan 19 06-24-10 02:55 PM

Excellent project!
However I hope that's a great port job, cuz sub 160whp, even in a miata isn't exactly "explosive"

Back in the days i had a 93 miata with a stock s4 turbo motor and it was tits,i used front mounted engine setup with a SE oil pan,the front cover was milled 2 use the stock s4 water pump and housing, cutted and shave the stock cross member and a modified sway bar,the firewall was modified cause the stock T2 trans was hitting it and the slave cilinder.

i have to agree with sharingan; altho this is a bitchin build (ive thought of it myself too since i have a na8c miata and have had several 13b's sitting around at various times) i dont think its really worth the trouble if your not gonna go for over 200whp. altho not as unique or generally awesome as a rotary miata, there are lots of guys making stock na 13b power levels (and much more) from supercharged and turbocharged miatas that took no headache at all and a weekend to do.

with that said, it still is a really great build, it looks awesome. i dunno how active you are on the miata forums but watch out, lots of guys who bring up the subject of rotary miatas there meet a harsh reception. but dont worry about any dickheads there, your build is sweet and they're just too close-minded

Post pics of the subframe/crossmember work you do to make it work.

It would help a great amount.

N3v 06-25-10 01:22 AM

i will, dropping the subframe tommorrow morning.

I know its kind of a lofty goal and I'll probably have to switch to irtbs, but I'm hoping to get 200+ wheel out of it. It will already be on a full standalone. The port job was my first try but I think I did a pretty decent job.

Since I'm having a custom header made, it will be tough to turbo it later. I'd probably supercharge it (with a gilmer pulley on the supercharger, bahaha) or toss some juice on it. Non-turbo seems like it should be adequate if I can get 200-210whp with irtbs, which would be a slightly higher power:weight than a stock FD.

teddyrx2 06-25-10 01:25 AM

sweet project, very clean

blwfly 06-25-10 11:12 AM

there is no reason you cant turbo later..u already have a stand alone so your one step closer,n/a engines just get less boost..

91verty 06-27-10 02:06 PM

N3 now you know you need to turbo that thing! what are you thinking? Is going through all that work worth 40-50 more hp?

I didn't think so....now lets start mocking the IC and turbo

91verty 06-27-10 02:08 PM

Uh sorry babe, can't come in right now. My 13b is taking a nap on the floor......maybe some other time

whoops, haven't updated in a while. car is almost running. finished the exhaust yesterday.
heres the 13b bolted up to the miata tranny hooked to the stock miata driveline and power plant frame.

heres the cuts i took out of the subframe. still needed more though:
http://i301.photobucket.com/albums/n...9/IMG_0132.jpg
then i put it back together to tow it to my fabricator

that is not the final shape of the oil pan, it didn't clear the steering rack so we bashed it in with a hammer, but decided to go back and cut and reweld. dont have any pics of that yet. and when we were doing the exhaust I didn't have my camera on me so here's some teasers:
http://i301.photobucket.com/albums/n...707001242a.jpg
http://i301.photobucket.com/albums/n...0707001422.jpg
its a long collector style exhaust. two 2" pipes all the way back with a magnaflow straight-through muffler on each pipe. they collect after 118 inches, which on a miata is past the diff. I just had room for a little 6" piece of 2.5" as a collector/exhaust tip. fits perfectly. the exhaust is off getting high-temp coated right now, will take more pics later
