Rotary 2002?
 
Was thinking about Picking up a Roller 1976 BMW 2002 automatic "The autos have more room for a bigger tranny" and All it really needs is floors then shes good for a swap of some kind. problem is the Power to money ratio on bimmer drivelines kinda suck.....ok really suck and I love rotaries. For the price of this roller I really gotta have it. my love for 2002s and RX3s are identicle but I can never find an RX3 anywhere around here.
So anyone done the swap? 13b or 20b whatever LMK if its been done or anybody cant point me in the right direction or has an RX3 for less than a grand anywhere in New York he he

Loose the bmer and get a rx3 or rx2. They're out there, you just have to look. If your going to stick with the old bmer then I would put a M3 engine in it. I like to stay make with make. Just my .02.

Depending on your hp needs, an S4 NA, 146 hp, or an S4 TII 180+ hp would be you best bet for a swap. How's the rockers on the BMW, they always seemed to be the 1st to rust out on the 2002's.

Another Option
 
A lighter weight car will give you more performance for the same engine, and the compromise is in the handling. In 1987 I put a 13b in a 1980 GLC Sport, drove it over 100,000 miles in 4 years. If you can find an RX-3 front engine crossmember, it is basically a bolt in, only requiring a fabrication of the rear tranny mount. It is very easy to adapt the early RX-7 struts with their bigger brakes. We even found a driveline from an Alfa that bolted right in!

If I was gonna stay BMW "with the driveline" I was Planing on making it an M2 as a couple of people refer to as an S14 2002 "nothing to do with nissan". The S14 is the 2.3L 4banger from the 1st generation M3 or E30M3 and In evolution spec were 2.5s.The S14 was a direct desendant of the M10 "the original 2.0 stocker lump".The swap isnt hard its just hard to find an S14 for cheap and they are all very robust high compression motors but I have to have boost I just cant help it. And Even though the fastest BMWs in the world were M2 Turbos untill a year or two ago "8-second range" I just think building a rotary would be cheaper and more obnoxiosly loud!!

I did a 1969 BMW 2002 'bout 5-6 yrs. ago - used a stock '87 TII set-up, ECU and all! The engine tucked nicely in there with only a slight problem routing the MAF - you might have to cut a little sheet metal if you're gonna stay w/ stock MAF. The big problem IS the driveline. The 2002 uses that 2-pc. d/shaft with the rubber coupling attaching the two shafts. Points to consider:

#1: Orig, coupling is WEAK! I won't take the abuse. (Passive driving is the only way the orig. style coupling will last for any amount of time - which totally defeats your purpose, I believe, for building a Rotary 2002.)

#2: 1-pc. d/shaft won't work!, because the angle of the shaft is too steep to connect to the diff and, to use a 1-pc. shaft, you'd have to hack up the rear section of the car to do it and the shaft would be too long (vibration), anyway.

You could probably overcome the issue by adapting a coupling from a truck, which takes more abuse from torque than the stocker.
My prob was destroying the coupling by way of lead foot and boost addiction (didn't take much, trust me...).

However, it was fun, though, low to the ground, boosting and watching faces as boost came on you moved away like something other than a 2002.

Yeah BMW calles them "Guibos" and they fail on all there cars.
U are the man and u have to find me some pics or something?
would a bigger turbo be a problem??
length ways was there more room for say another rotor?? so many questions lol I really want to make it a beast. :Kill1:

I have a 1969 bmw 2002 that I really want to put a 13b in. Ive wanted to do a swap of some kind for a while. The bmw s14's are too expensive and so is a turbo m10. I dont have tons of money but I really want some good performance. Ive thought about a nissan sr20det s14, or a rb25 det... but the 13b puts out some great hp. I dont know too much about rotary engines and their reliability. Ijust havent had any experience with them. If you have any advice or info on the rotary swap I would really appreciate it if you could send it my way.

As in maintenance... or in purchasing the motor? Cause the Motors are not that expensive.
