REPU Specs
 

Hey guys. I've serched quite a bit and have found that the REPU has a 1400lbs payload but havne't really seen any specs on towing capacity. I just wanted to hear some experience with anyone towing with a REPU and what mods the REPU had or didn't have. I want to buy one and tow my 83 RX-7 with it with the 7 being on a tow dolly plus luggage. Anyone think a stock REPU could handle this okay? It would be a 2300 mile trip. Any imput is welcome. i have seen pics of a repu towing a suburban. but it had a custom tow truck back on it. The pic is in this forum, I just lost it when I reformatted

I own a RE/PU,but I am not sure of its towing capacity.I would think it should tow a RX-7 with little trouble,but I wouldn't want to do a trip like that in my RE/PU.The cab is really small. The brakes are probably the biggest problem(wedge style non-vented disks) when it comes to towing heavy loads.I would think you will need a receiver hitch of some sort to tow that sort of load,and I bet you won't find one at U-haul.I do know of a guy that was selling a custom made hitch for a RE/PU years ago,but I have not ever seen another one.I would think you could custom make one.I wouldn't however tow it on the bumper.A RX-7 isn't really heavy,and I know the truck could do it,but stopping it,and towing comfortably is another question.I would think towing short distances is fine,but you are talking about a serious distance. I have seen the pics of the RE/PU tow truck,but that truck is modified pretty heavily in the rear axle department(most notably dualies),and even at that I would think it is overloaded most of the time.

I commend you on wanting to buy a RE/PU to tow a 7,but I think you would do better to get a more suitable tow vehicle for long distances like that.I know my RE/PU was used by a famous RX-7 racer of the 80's to tow his race car,but I bet it wasn't used to tow that sort of distances.Have you ever driven a RE/PU?Have you ever driven one long distance?How big of a person are you? How high is your "pucker" factor?I know I get a little scared towing a 5k# camper with my 92 Cummins diesel truck,and that is a towing machine.Good luck in whatever you choose to do.I may even be selling my RE/PU soon,but I am not sure yet.

Thanks. I remember coming accross that first thread a while back but really wanted to hear the setups if they were stock or modified. Sounds like it should make the trip just fine. I'd still like to find that tow truck REPU. That would be cool. I think a supercharged 13B 4 port sounds pretty nice for a little REPU. Power on demand in the lower end for towing track 7's. I'm only about 5' 8" and it's all highway and I think deceling in enough time would be perfectly fine to stop it. I'd put in a solid hitch on the frame rails. I wouldn't trust the bumper too well. To not though I will be driving the RX-7 that distance to start. Then coming back in the REPU I would have a co driver as well so not as bad. I've never driven a REPU but I'm sure after driving a 7 2300 miles a REPU wont feel small at all LOL

I'm going to try and buy one of AMTGoofy's REPU's if they are in good shape at a decent price. Problem is I would buy it after I've moved which will be father away from his location, so either I drive to pick it up or shell out and have it shipped

Never seen published towing capacity, only payload. Even the repu sales brochure does not have it. I know of some guys who towed their rx3 race cars with repu. open bed trailer, spares and tools in the bed.

brakes are biggest concern, non vented front discs and rear drums. i would hope you tow on flat ground, going down a mountain with 2500lbs behind you and those brakes doesn't sound fun.

One guy added a leaf to the rear suspension which helped with sag. you can also get gabriel hi-jacker air shocks (i have them), those alone can handle 1200lbs of weight at full pressure.

I've towed an REPU with my REPU before. My friend borrowed mine and towed a couple bajas. He then got a '77 REPU and we installed an S5 T2 and a 7" SC and he tows a big trailer made for a baja but it can also accept an RX-7 or whatever else we see fit to deposit on it.

There's never been a towing job that our trucks haven't been able to handle. Of course we don't try to tow enormous loads or obviously stupid stuff. Just keep it within reason and it'll surprise you what these little trucks can do.
