Question on twin distributor motor and transmission combo
 

So from my research every twin dizzy motor had top mount starter,so here is my question can any 74-newer transmissions be bolted to the twin dizzy motor?i read there is differences in the bolt patterns.i just pulled a motor out of a rx2 which has twin distributors but has a 4 speed bottom mount starter transmission bolted to the engine.
Very strange unless there was early twin dizzy motors with bottom mount starters.

I know the transmission has been changed because they cut some holes on the firewall for it to clear the slave cylinder and starter .

rx4 12a twin dizzy ( 1973 ) is bottom starter .. so is a 1973 oz/jap 10a twin dizzy rx3 ( with top exit fork )

I have a twin dizzy bottom mount starter engine in the barn with its trans still mounted up. If you need pictures for reference just let me know.

Yeah if possible post some pics here,I'm just wondering if on a top mount twin dizzy motor if there is a opening on the rear iton like most newer engines.

Bottom mount starter cars were very rare!

Just Did some research on rxforyour7.com where they are selling a '71-73 bottom starter rear iron and a top mount '71-73 rear iron. The top mount starter iron doesn't have the hump cast into it to accommodate the nose of the starter. Sorry to be the bearer of bad news. Btw was the oil pan reversed on the engine? I've seen fools bolt in Rx3 engines in to Rx2s without reversing the pan which once bolted to the banana crossmember pushes the engine/box back a few inches. This may be why the firewall was hacked up.

Yeah oil pan is stock rx2 oil pan I'm guessing(its rear sump) with no indication of redrilling.

I've been messing with newer 12A's for a while now, but I remember that I had changed the aluminum timing cover from a 73 to an 85 to make the 73 single distributor electric ignition, instead of twin points!!! Can anybody refresh my memory and tell me this can be done??

correct, its a 12a rear sump from the factory.

On your first question, Mazda produced bottom/side early twin dizzy bell-housings that are totally different bolt pattern meaning they fit twin dizzy engines only so no 74-up bolt up.
